Do you enjoy decorating your home for the holidays? I am not so much a holiday decorator as I am a seasonal decorator. Years ago when I was first married I thought I needed all the latest holiday decor. So many young married women around me splurged every year on new decor items for the various holidays/celebrations so I had this mindset it's just what people do. I was definitely lacking some wisdom, and you could say I was trying to keep up with the Jones'

Over the years I have certainly found my style, and have gained some wisdom along the way. I have learned I don't need the latest trends to make my home feel warm and inviting, and I certainly don't need to purchase seasonal and holiday decor every year. In honor of the official start of autumn, I wanted to share an unexpected place to add seasonal touches just by shopping my house.

ADDING SEASONAL TOUCHES TO YOUR HOME

Where to begin...some people like mood boards...some like flipping through magazines. I personally like to grab a cup of coffee, sit outside and ponder the smells, the colors, the feel of the season I'm currently in and go from there. When I think of autumn I think of oranges and browns, I think of deep colors, campfires, crunchy leaves, crisp air, warm savory smells. Once I have an idea, I try to imagine how I could incorporate those things throughout my home.

I naturally am drawn to browns, tans, deep blues, mustardy yellows...so I have a lot of those colors already in my home. That usually makes autumn decorating a little easier for me, but I think even if you don't gravitate to those colors in your home decor you can still easily and inexpensively incorporate them in.

Today I am sharing our bedroom, however these tips can be applied all over your home.

  • Use things such as books. You can easily stack a few colored books together to get cozy autumn vibes
  • Use nature. My boys are always bringing the outside in. They collect pine cones and acorns...I would recommend putting the pine cones in the oven on low to kill any buggies that may be living in them, haha. I don't know exact times and temps but a quick search could give the specifics.
  • I love using tree branches, goldenrod, dried flowers, and leaves in my home during the autumn season. A quick little hike and you'll be able to find loads of beautiful foliage to bring inside. If you have allergies try drying it out in a shed or garage first, or invest in some faux stems to use again and again.
  • Think outside the box. Don't be afraid to shop your house and move things around. I took our sofa pillows which are a deep blue velvet and used them in our bedroom. Moving pieces around can really freshen up a space. I also had a shirt that I had thrifted a while back. I love it, but it's really low cut for my taste and honestly I've only worn it once. I decided to wrap it around a little pillow and pin it to see if I really liked it as a pillow cover first. I love it, so I'll likely be cutting it up and sewing a pillow cover in the next day or so. Never be afraid to experiment and reuse old things that are sitting around your home.
  • Try using texture to add interest. Layering blankets in a basket, or draping them over the arm of a chair. These small touches add interest and coziness to a space. Choosing those warm colors will make it feel more autumn inspired, too.
  • Incorporate every day items. Use your clothing as "decor" I love hanging my favorite pieces from the peg rail in our room. They always correspond to the season so it's an easy way to make a room feel more seasonal. I do the same with our mudroom peg rail. Dry your flowers from a hook in your kitchen, fill a pot with homemade potpourri and leave it on the stove top. Display your seasonal fruit in a bowl on the table, hang a leaf garland above your kitchen sink. These are just everyday things that add beauty to our spaces

I hope these ideas have inspired you enjoy the season and all of its beauty. I also hope it encourages you to look around your home to see what you already have that could be used to add seasonal warmth and coziness. Thanks for stopping by, friends!

Blessings,

Bree
