When Your Kid Asks, 'Mama, Did You Get Fat?'

I'm very pleased today to have an excerpt on Scary Mommy from Angela Garbes' powerful new book Essential Labor: Mothering As Social Change. And I'm particularly happy to have this lovely section, about one of those moments where you have to balance your own complicated feelings with what you want to teach your kids. In this case, she pulled out a honeymoon photo of herself and her husband, and her daughter asked, frank and curious: "Mama, did you get fat?"

She only had a split second to think about her answer: "I look down at my stomach. It is fat. I've done a good job, though, I think. To my girls, fat is just fat, an adjective. It's only me who brings judgment to it. Suddenly, before I can ruin the moment by speaking, they are on me, kissing my stomach, resting their faces on it, petting it, squealing." Give it a read – I'll be thinking about her daughter singing "My only Mama, my squishy Mama" for a long time.

STAGES
9 Is A Weird Age. Here's What I've Learned.

The tween years are weird – they're not little kids anymore, but they're not grown, either. Today Samm Burnham Davidson is reflecting on this in-between stage and how she's shifted the way she connects with her son: "Long gone are afternoons in the sandbox, rides on my shoulders, and rice-covered bed sheets. In a slow transition, without me even actively realizing, he went from a baby in my arms to a big kid by my side," she writes. "He isn't quite as keen on a mother-son cuddle session as I would like him to be. So, we do other stuff — often as equal participants." Maybe you can relate?

WoMo Newsletter: Tuesday 10th May 2022

Hey WoMos

Welcome to May!  Last weekend we had sun and the park near my house was completely rammed.  It was like a peak summers day!  You can definitely feel a good energy in the air when the BBQs start, and the flip flops come out.  But I did get the incessant demands for an ice cream from my 6 year old. Here begins 5 months of ice creams…!

It has been a good couple of weeks overall with exciting progress made towards the next module for WoMo.  Hayley, on the WoMo team is talking to our expert partners as we build the module for menopause, and we are adding new content to our maternity tech all the time.  Please remember to introduce us to your employer.  We want to have a chat with your Head of HR or Diversity & Inclusion lead on how to retain female talent.

This week we feature Louise Deverell-Smith within our 'Meet the WoMos' section. Last week was Maternal Mental Health Awareness and we talked about this a lot on our Instagram grid.  With the summer holidays around the corner we're giving you a great offer of 50% off Family Traveller and last call to book onto the beautiful 7 day restore retreat at Kalukanda House, Sri Lanka.

Have a great week!

MEET THE WOMOS: LOUISE DEVERELL-SMITH

What is your WoMo guilty pleasure?

"Spending a peaceful 1hr, straight after drop off, in TK Maxx with none of my children!"

MATERNAL MENTAL HEALTH

Last week was maternal mental health awareness week which we featured heavily on our Instagram account.  It's such an important topic that needs talking about, not just for a week during an awareness campaign but always.  Here at WoMo Network, we are here to support you with wellbeing and practical advice throughout your motherhood journey.
