I Can't Let The House Get Messy Because Of My Anxiety

"I am often asked: 'How the hell is your house so clean with four little kids?'" writes Samm Burnham Davidson. But she's actually embarrassed by comments on the pristine state of her home: "Oh, don't be impressed," I explain. "It is very simply one of the ways my anxiety disorder is on display for all to see."

In this latest piece, she talks about the ways that her anxiety takes her out of the moment, and how hard that is. "I clean so I don't freak out. And the cleaning is the least of it." It'll make you think twice before assuming you know what's going on with another mom.

When Lynda Lin Grigsby's son was little, "I surgically removed taboo words from my vocabulary and replaced them with watered-down descriptions of my inner turmoil every time I stubbed my toe," she writes. (Same – I often find myself yelling "doggone it," even when my house is empty.) But now, her kid is older, which means she can finally, finally let the swears fly. And it feels great.
