My Kid Has A Bizarre Obsession With Humpty Dumpty

This one is for all the parents out there whose kid has become totally fascinated with a specific character or thing — which is to say practically all of us. It's extra funny in this case because, for Julie Kling's son, it isn't Thomas the Tank Engine or a Paw Patrol pup. It's Humpty Dumpty, nursery rhyme protagonist. And it's been an obsession for almost a full calendar year, at this point.

She writes: "With the song and story firmly implanted in my son's heart, he started reenacting Humpty's fall and putting him back together again whenever and wherever he could, using whatever and whoever was available to him. This orange you're about to eat? It's now orange Humpty! That baby you're currently breastfeeding? Button up Mama, I need her for the King's Horse, and you're the King's Men!"

But it turns out there are very real developmental reasons for this sort of thing, and benefits, too. Something to tell yourself while answering your 87th question of the morning about the Frozen universe.

Here's What Happened When I Used Silence More In My Parenting

It's always so tempting to respond to your kids with justifications and arguments. Thao Thai — who admits that she is a lifelong talker — tried something new, and that's keeping her mouth shut for a moment. She's not talking about cruelly deploying the silent treatment; she's talking about responding with an even, neutral look and a moment for everybody involved to pause and reset. And it really, really worked.
