Going Through The College Process With My Teen Gives Me Wedding-Planning PTSD

"Every bride thinks she'll be chill and every mom thinks she won't get insane about the college process," observes Jessica G. Hartshorn. Famous last words, as she admits in her latest: "Ahahaha the number of times I've advised friends, 'Don't let your child apply to more than ten schools!' Well, there are 15 and counting on my son's current list," she admits.

This very funny and self-aware piece outlines the similarities she's discovered between the two processes, from the fact that you have to start a year in advance to the reality that everybody is going to share their opinion, even when you do not want their opinion. Then, of course, there's the absolutely staggering price tag, which always seems higher than you expected… and you expected it to be pretty high.

Forewarned is forearmed, right? Right???

Mompowerment Thoughts

Hi read,

How are you today? How's everything going? Want to take advantage of opportunities during the Great Realignment? (Remember, there is more to this moment than the Great Resignation.) Working moms and dads are realigning their work roles to better fit their lifestyles. I've got 4 tips to set you up to take advantage of the Great Realignment.

Is it time for a mindset shift? You must believe that you will find a role that fits your needs. A few mantras might help: I can find what I want. I can do hard things. I bring value to my team/employer/ client. It is the right time.

Know what you want. Now that you're in the right mindset, know what you want. Visualize it. What do you want to be doing each day? What type of role do you want? What kind of flexibility are you looking for? How will your employer or clients support you? What long-term experience do you want?

The Mompowerment Know Your Why Guide can help dig more into this. Reply to this with I want the Know Your Why Guide in the subject line and I'll send it right over.

Do it your way. You will see lots of tips that help you create opportunities during the Great Realignment. Lots of posts and ads talk about doing things in a specific way to get ahead. Don't let someone's sales pitch convince you that you won't succeed without what they offer.

Get ideas, but don't feel you must follow anyone's specific steps or plan to find success. Take what you need from here and/or from other articles and don't get bogged down by the rest. Hint. It will help you to know your strengths and value. What do you bring to the table that others don't?

Your tribe matters. Don't feel you have to figure this out or make changes alone. In fact, you're more likely to get what you want if you take time to network. It's that important.  Networking was the #1 tip from working moms I interviewed on how to create more of the balance you crave. Whether you need new mentors for your personal board of directors, allies to recommend you, or someone to open doors, networking can help

What changes are you trying to make? Are you struggling with a specific area as you aim to make these changes?

Can't wait to see what you share!

Suzanne

PS I'd I'm considering setting up two Zoom calls for those who subscribe to the Mompowerment newsletter, one for employees and one for entrepreneurs. Reply back with I'm in and whichever one you are so I can get a general idea of interest.
