We are now starting our third week of school. This week is going smoothly compared to our second week of school. Talk about a rough week. For being our second week it was emotional and scary. The school I work at is located next to a middle school. During the week a call was made to law enforcement that there was a shooter at the school. The officers where not able to determine where this call was coming from and rather it was a false report. They called our school and said to go into lock down.
During this time we had police show up and were clearing rooms and hallways to ensure that everyone was safe as well as to ensure there was no bad guy in the building. They walked the halls with guns, checking classroom to make sure everyone is safe. We were still in the hallway and were told to report to the office, which we did. The officers responded quickly and were very efficient in ensuring that our building, student's and staff was safe.
The aftermath of this situation meant some anxiety for students including C. She was very worried and scared. C and I had to have a conversation about what happened. It appears that what happened was a middle school student(s) thought it would be funny to call 911 and make a false statement about there being a shooter at the school....a prank.
We talked about how some kids make poor choices. We talked about how there was not real shooter and how she was safe the whole time. It amazes me that students do this and think its funny. ITS NOT FUNNY. Scarying several hundered children because you didn't want to be back at school...very poor choice.
This made for a very emotional week for staff, students and parents. Thankfully it was a prank. I am very grateful that it was nothing more. Hopefully the rest of the school year is uneventful and quiet.
