I realise that this is a topic that deserves more attention because a lot of people can benefit from this knowledge with some parents feeling very much uncertain about their children's education everywhere but most especially Eswatini.

Homeschooling explained again

Homeschooling is teaching your children using DVDs or through online learning in your home or any space you desire to use without going to a school physically.

Today our main focus is the DVDs Programme

When we started homeschooling our children, we chose the DVD programme for our children because we felt we were still new homeschooling so we chose a programme that would allow us to be flexible with our time. We surely did not want to miss deadlines for assignments so we chose the DVD programme.

DVD programme explained.

The DVD programme is part of homeschooling style you can choose as a parent where the parent can be a homeschool teacher to her own children. It is not limited to teaching by yourself but you are able to outsource a tutor to facilitate lessons for you.

DVD programme is choosing pre- recorded lessons with a teacher and lessons for each day. The teacher for each pre-recorded class plays throughout the lessons each day and teaches physical students which is the recorded lessons and the homeschooled child is included too and engaged by asking of questions which the tutor or parent can assist the child engage in class by monitoring questions are answered. Not only that but the child understands the lesson.

There are close to 200 lessons for each school year that have been pre- recorded for each school year. This depends on how much you manage to do with your child each day. It is easier to finish if you are committed to doing each lesson a day but i have learnt that can be a challenge if you work fulltime and want your children to be assisted by you in their lessons.

How do i get DVD's?

Your DVD's are shipped to you together with your child's books and workbooks atfer you pay school fees. As soon as your DVD's arrive, you notify the school and they update your school start date because you can now easily start your lessons.

Advantages of DVD programme

Personally as a working mother of three i prefer the DVD programmes because i would come home completely exhausted from work and will play the DVD at my own scheduled time table while i monitor each child.

I would use after working hours to take our children through class by playing the lessons for the day.

We would use saturday mornings and most holidays to to catch up with our lessons.

Each time the children did not understand a lesson we replay the lesson from a DVD which appears in list form.

Despite that the DVD programme, the child is included as part of the classroom by being engaged with questions by the teacher who records during recorded lessons.

How will a child schooled by DVD's interact with other children?

This is what concerns most parents. If you are a parent who had taken children to a public school and then switched to homeschooling this may be your major concern and its completely understandable.

Understand that children are different and they each have preferences and likes.

Different things get children to interact with their encironment and homeschool offers parents an opportunity to know what their children are passionate about at an early age simply because they spend so much time together.

Who can use DVD programmes

Parents who have demanding jobs but still want to be a part of teaching their children from home.

New to homeschooling! Try the DVD programme to minimise the anxiety of beating assignment deadlines yet you are still new to homeschool.

What you need for to start your DVD programme

You can plan your homeschooling journey through DVD programme by investing in these items that can enhance their learning environment at home.

  • Invest in a television set with a DVD player
  • Invest in a laptop
  • Invest in comfortable sitting area
  • Create a learning environment
  • Make use of the what they love be it music, colour charts and education games to engage them in their learning.
  • Invest in stationery (crayons, pencils, pens)

You may feel like this takes a lot of money but it creates the environment you desire in the longterm.

If you have just started do not put yourself under a lit of financial stress, minimise costs by using what you have like the laptop, home television, dining room table or whatever you can use to your advantage to make the transition to homeschool much easier.

As time goes, then you can accumulate the necessary equipment. Remember homeschool is flexible, you can take school with you even on holiday or wherever you decide to travel to while the children still have to have their classes.

Homeschool is not easy when you start because for the homeschooling parent it can mean a lot of work in tutoring or  teaching the children yourself. However that is not the only options as you will see in the previous posts on Homeschooling you can hire a home tutor to assist you with lessons.

Remember to ask questions in the comments section and leave whatever comment you have so i am aware of things i have not talked about that could help other parents.
