The challenges for the British labour market over the short to medium term
Having got through the Covid-19 pandemic comparatively unscathed, the UK labour market is now at a turning point. Strong demand for workers is fuelling high wage growth, but the cost of living is surging faster, and some are warning that excessive wage demands will tip the UK into recession. This is threatening to mask the longer-lasting positive and negative impacts of the Covid crisis, from the increased opportunities offered by remote or hybrid working, to the rise in inactivity and the interruptions to careers experienced by younger workers.
Mark Dawe, Chief Executive, The Skills Network
Levelling up and the intersection of employability and skills
Levelling up is rightly a government priority. But do we really know what good looks like and how we get there? Good sustainable employment requires skills acquisition but is that really understood and acted upon?
Employment, skills, and upskilling are an absolute priority for the UK. For decades we have faced a disjointed approach from the top down between those in government driving the employment agenda and those driving the skills agenda. Those delivering on the ground attempt to bring coherence, linking skills enhancement to employability, but do we have an environment where that is actually possible?
What are the challenges and how do we get through them to ultimately deliver economic and social benefit to the country, its communities, employers, and individuals?
Jane Mansour, ReAct Programme Director, Institute for Employment Studies (IES)
Harnessing Collaborative Advantage – the ReAct Model

This will include a focus on the creation of the Prime Provider Network to focus and facilitate shared employer engagement.
