I had the road to myself this morning, but there are days that I think I am my own worst enemy. Today may be one of those days. It is now 4:00 a.m., and I am inside the terminal and at the gate for my 5:25 a.m. flight to Baltimore.
So why am I not drinking Starbuck's Coffee? Truth be told, it didn't appear that Starbucks was open when I walked past it on my way to my gate. In addition, there were probably 25 people waiting in line to get their morning coffee. I'm assuming they open at 4:00 a.m. I arrived before then and I wouldn't stand in a line that long even if they had been open.
If you think a very early morning departure is a good idea, you may need to give it more thought? What proved to be a quick commute to Bergstrom International Airport was enjoyable. It was perfect weather for a rag-top-down experience
The last time I flew, I made my commute to the airport in the Miata. For years, I've thought the answer to narrow parking spaces at the airport was the Miata. However, I never drove it to the airport because my luggage wouldn't fit in the trunk.
The trunk is so small that the car doesn't even have a spare tire. There was no way my suitcase would fit. I'm embarrassed to tell you that I've tried more than once over the past 5 1/2 years, and the answer is always the same.
Sometimes I am blinded to alternatives that obviously are a simple solution. Had my daughter not suggested I put my luggage in the passenger seat, the thought would never have occurred to me. I am obviously dumber than dirt.
When I drove past the do-it-yourself carwash in Dripping Springs, I was surprised to see someone washing their jeep. Seriously, who goes to the car wash at that time of morning?
As I edged out of Dripping Springs, I had the road completely to myself. The speed limit is 55 mph because traffic is usually heavy. I had the passing thought, I could safely driver faster, and there is no one on the road.
I didn't fall for it. I know that on the other side of any number of hills waits a law enforcement officer wanting me to make his day.
Sure as shooting, no sooner than the thought entered my head, there was a Sheriff's car parked on a side road waiting for someone to speed past. I didn't take the bait this morning.
I opted to park at the airport rather than in off-site parking because it is less expensive. I had the parking lot mostly to myself.
I unloaded the Miata, got back into the car and put the top up and rolled up the windows. I then retrieved my luggage and walked to closest bus stop.
Presto - no sooner than I arrived, the bus pulled up and I got on. I had the bus to myself.
The driver asked me what time did my flight leave? When I told him 5:25, he said we would wait for more people to get on the bus.
That wasn't a message I wanted to hear. I countered: "Actually, I'd prefer to wait for my flight inside the terminal where I could use my computer or drink coffee.
He eventually said, "I guess I could take you." I breathed a sigh of relief.
Getting through security was also memorable. I had a pocket full of change. I asked the person next to the conveyer belt for the x-ray machine if they had a tray I could put change in? She replied: "Put you change in your luggage?
Have you ever had the task of retrieving loose change from inside a backpack? It wasn't the answer I wanted, but I did as I was told.
As I prepared to walk through the x-ray machine, I realized my wallet was still in my back pocket. I asked if I needed to remove it from my pocket.
She said yes and handed me a white trey that I had anticipated I'd receive when I asked for something for my change.
My flight is soon to board, and I have not yet had coffee.
