HEADS UP: I (Sara) feel that I talk even the tiniest bit more in-depth about the contents of the episode than Lesley, especially when it comes to the ending of the episode. If you haven't seen the episode yet, please proceed through this review with caution, as it may contain more spoilers than a typical review on this blog.
The episode opens with the main cast - a group that is prone to bickering - enjoying a meal together. Despite requesting that the ginger buds be nix from her tofu because Alas Ramus is going to be eating it as well, Ashiya states that they can't have Alas Ramus growing up to be a picky eater. Some banter occurs between the cast, which is temporarily interrupted by a broadcast on TV. The banter resumes, with Emi being oddly silent. Maou asks why, and Emi finally breaks the news - she's heading back to Ente Isla. While Maou, Emi, and Suzuno are walking Chiho home, Emi opens up as to why she's heading back, and states to return no later than the 12th - due to it being the day that the joint birthday party for her and Chiho is on. At the station, the three say bye to Emi, with Emi stating that she'd be back next week. Maou then returns to the apartment at Villa Rosa Sasazuka, where Ashiya presents a 15% off coupon for a store, with the intent to use it, and Urushihara asks about an inquiry he had made. Maou ends up snapping at the three since he feels that they've lost a bit of pride as demon generals. During this snapping, Suzuno bursts in and yells at them to stop, since the three demons' fighting could disturb her. Meanwhile, at Chiho's school, she's in the hallway of a school building and pulls out her ring which has a fragment of Yesod inside of it, since it could react when Emi passed through a Gate. The ring reacts, and a message from Suzuno confirms that Emi crossed Ente Isla successfully. We see scenes showing what appears to be regular days with dates on them, to help showcase the passage of time.
On the 11th, we see that Maou is busy studying for a test to get a license for a moped to be prepared since MgRonald's plans on starting a delivery program and - with Maou being scheduled as a shift manager - he might have to cover delivery shifts. The next day, Suzuno visits Maou to ask if he'd heard from Emi. Maou hasn't, and Suzuno hasn't heard anything from Emi or Emerelda. We also get an idea of what the situation of Ente Isla is currently like, and how that would tie into Emi suddenly going radio silent. While the suggestion of overloading Maou with celestial force to regain his power is made by Urushihara, it's shot down because Emi was there to help the first time, and Suzuno doesn't have as much celestial force as Emi. Then Maou catches on to something - it was like the three wanted him to help out Emi, who is his enemy, and points out why he shouldn't - and even can't - do it. He turns a cold shoulder and points out that the party would be canceled if Emi didn't arrive. But it turns out that Suzuno didn't ask Maou because she wanted to...but because Chiho asked her to. Chiho provides her own view of Maou, and how she felt he was lying because in her eyes, Maou never goes back on promises. Chiho runs off, and Suzuno goes to comfort her. Maou goes back to sit in front of the laptop where he was sitting, and Ashiya provides some of his own wisdom as to why Emi isn't back. During this conversation, Urushihara begins looking for something, and when he vocalizes what he's doing, Maou says to just ignore him. The conversation between Ashiya and Maou continues, and Urushihara finds what he's looking for. The conversation manages to have Maou calm down and have him focus on getting the moped license.
The next day, Maou heads on a bus to go to the place where he's going to take the exam to get his license. At one of the stops, the bus picks up two people - a child who has the same hair and eye colors as Alas Ramus, and the man that appeared to be her guardian. The two go next to Maou, with the child sniffing Maou. The man asks the child - named Tsubasa - to apologize. She promptly does so, and when Maou gets to his stop, he presses the button to stop and gets off, surprising Tsubasa. Back at the apartment in Villa Rosa Sasazuka, Ashiya is putting laundry up on the line to dry when he notices that Rika is outside. Back at the Fuchu Driver's License Center, Maou tries to study before his exam, just for him to run into Tsubasa and her father again. As it turns out, they - well, more specifically, the dad - are here to get a license as well, and it's not their first time to do so...heck, I think they've attempted more times than the average human. Tsubasa is only here because her father can't read kanji well, and...Tsubasa didn't study. Then introductions get under way, though Tsubasa's is...odd. When introducing herself, she begins to say a name that starts with "A", but then pivots and says the name Tsubasa Satou. Her father is Hiroshi Satou, and Maou just introduces himself as Maou. Tsubasa asks if he's a king of demons, and it almost seems as if Tsubasa has figured out Maou's identity...but then she says that "Maou" sounds like the name of a final boss in a video game, so it looks like she doesn't know yet. Tsubasa then sniffs Maou again, and Maou runs off. Hiroshi tells her not to do things that would make her stand out, but Tsubasa commented that Maou smelled familiar.
Back at the apartment, Rika has been let in and reveals why she's here...she hasn't heard from Emi for a while, and since it seemed like she didn't really have anybody outside of work that was considered a friend, they were all really worried. Though Rika says something interesting...Rika hadn't heard from Emi for a week, even though everyone else hadn't heard from her for three weeks. The call was to swap shifts, and Rika was confident that it was Emi. During the conversation, rain that was not in the forecast begins to fall, causing Ashiya and Urushihara to take the laundry off the line and for Suzuno to close her window. Ashiya berates Urushihara, but Rika insists it's okay. But as it turns out...there's an emergency, since Chiho sent an idea link to Suzuno. Suzuno gives Urushihara one of the bottles of concentrated celestial force since he's really their only option at the moment. The two chug their bottles and use the Divine Boots of Light to fly, leaving a facepalming Ashiya and a surprised Rika in the apartment.
This episode was enjoyable to watch, even though I've already read the section of the light novel that this episode is adapting. It was very interesting to see how the animators chose to adapt the scenes from the light novel, though I wish they kept in the part where Ashiya and Maou talk about the cost of the moped license and how part of it was being covered by MgRonald's. While there's something about A-I mean Tsubasa that I don't consider mentioned in the review, it's probably easy enough for you to figure it out yourself. Despite my knowledge of the source material, I'm excited to see how next week's episode plays out.
