Thanksgiving can make or make your budget, it is a good time to stock on baking items. The turkey can make several meals. I always buy an additional turkey breast because my husband eats a ton of turkey sandwiches.
This one of the oldest money saving tricks in the book is to simply take care of your things. These are so many areas of your life where this applies. Road trips are a great way to lose or destroy things. Our kids bring a backpack for their electronics and other items. We were staying at the hotel and a teenager was having a MAJOR MELTDOWN. He had lost the charger to his ipad. I carry a case of charging cords, charging blocks, and thumbdrives, if someone has an electronic need, you can bet I have it. I offered the mother privately to borrow my rapid charger while we were at breakfast. She happily accepted. I think the entire breakfast room sighed a collective sigh of relief. Teenage tantrums are worse than toddler tantrums. A kind act is a priceless for a quiet cup of coffee.
One of the most inexpensive things a parent can do is to raise kind, polite, hard working, and caring people. We had a very long week. It would have been VERY EASY to be unkind to each other. My husband and I had a tense exchange on day one. He was having difficulty with fixing the sink. He said to me, " I don't want to do a half-assed job." I started laughing out of stress and exhaustion. Mind, you I had just finished done putting up all new smoke detectors standing on a chair frame because the tenant had stolen my step ladder. " So, yes, my dear husband, we are flying by the seat of our pants on this one." He was pretty disgusted with my laughter and had to take a minute. Then, he saw what I had been climbing on. Then, we were both laughing.
No one really wants to deal with cleaning up the messes of tenants. We know what needs to happen to make a profit on the rentals. We pay the children an hourly rate when we work on the house. I know what a crew would charge us for the work we did. We did for a 1/3 of the cost which includes our travel and lodging.
We all glad to be home.
