"Wonka" is Prequel to the classic "Willy Wonka and the Chocolat Factory" movie from 1971. Based on Roald Dahl's characters. Now we know Hollywood is out of ideas and they are desperate to find something that will capture the audiences attention. But messing with the *Classics*, that's never a good idea. But I am curious…
*The MEAT* It is a fantasy origin story about how Willy Wonka became the biggest candy maker in the world. "Wonka" story is *Cute, Fun and Uplifting* for sure and is in the best spirit of "a world of imagination." They did do a good job there.
*The PATATOES* Timothee Chalamet channels his inner Gene Wilder here and turns in a "Fantastic Performance" as Willy Wonka, and far from the creepy Johny Depp Willy Wonka. There is also a terrific performance by Hugh Grant playing a distinguished Oompa Loompa that is quite memorable and a total surprise.
*The VERDICT* They tried, they really tried to make a new hit out of an old classic film that we all know so well, and I will say "Wonka" will entertain the smaller kids very well. But after seeing it I couldn't shake the feeling that it was missing something. And after thinking about it for a while, "Wonka" is actually missing good music which is very important for a Musical Movie, right? I'm sorry but there was nothing *Catchy* that I even remembered in a good way that I could sing in my head later. That said, I can see where the goofy acting, big colors and all-around cartoonish world would be appealing to the younger audiences, but not enough here in this film to please the "all ages" crowd. Which is unfortunate because they did try so hard.
Merry Christmas!!!
