The Color Purple - Review
The Color Purple - Budget of $100 million - 2 hours and 20 minutes
Celie and her sister, Nettie, reminisce about their mother when Celie's water breaks. Celie gives birth to a baby boy and names him Adam. Then, her father, Alfonso, enters to give the baby to God. Celie begs for more time with him, but her father says no. It's his baby, and he can do what he pleases. The same thing he did with the first baby, Olivia. Celie gives Alfonso Adam and cries with Nettie.
Nettie walks home from school, and Mister follows her on a horse while serenading her. He complements her hair, clothes, shoes, and feet. She stops him there because she is a tomboy with damaged feet. She calls Mister a liar and tells him to leave her alone. Mister follows Nettie home and asks Alfonso for her hand in marriage. Alfonso says no because Nettie is intelligent and has the potential to be a school teacher. However, Celie means nothing to him, but she can work. Alfonso is willing to trade Celie for livestock and eggs. As the men barter, Nettie and Celie watch. Nettie knows Mister is there for her but doesn't want to go. Mister has three children. Also, he cheated on his last wife before she died but had no feelings for her because she cheated, too. Alfonso tells Celie to pack her bags because she will marry Mister.
Celie, on foot, follows Mister on horseback to his home. He introduces her to his kids and tells her to start cleaning. Celine prepares dinner, and Mister demands to know why she didn't bathe the kids. She suggests doing it in the morning, and he slaps her to the floor. Celie bathes the kids. Late at night, Celie lays in bed and sees a picture of Shug Avery. Mister admits that's the woman he should've married. As Mister climbs on Celie, Celie stares at Shug's picture and dreams about her.
A few days later, Celie hears a knock at the door. It's Nettie. Alfonso started touching her, so she ran away. Celie begs Mister to let Nettie stay. He says yes, but only if she pulls her weight. The two sisters bond, play, and clean the house. Everything seems to be going well until Mister creeps into Nettie's room. She pleads with him to stop and fights him when Mister resists. He grabs his gun and drags her outside. He threatens to shoot Nettie if she ever returns. When Celie tries to leave, Mister pulls her back and refuses to let Celie go. Nettie promises to write Celie once a week to let Celie know she is alive. But the letters never come, and Celie falls deeper into a loveless marriage of abuse. What will it take for Celie to discover a way to love herself and triumph over her dire circumstances?
Based on The Color Purple: A New Musical, this movie doesn't change the story. It only adds music to the plot. Now, the writers shorten the beginning between Nettie and Celie talking about a man doing his business. So, they cut it out of the conversation between Shug and Celie later. Also, the writers removed most of the internal monologue. However, this film has your favorite lines and puts a beat to them. The movie passes the torch between the original Celie and the current (FTC Affiliate Disclaimer). Also, the sets change from a practical set to a stage setting without taking the audience out of the moment. It gives you a glimpse of the play but keeps you within the movie theater. The vocal performances are second to none, with perfect comedic timing. This film isn't a remake of the original. It is a screenplay based on the Broadway musical. Be ready to sing, dance, cry, and stand taller after seeing this gem come to life on the silver screen.

The Boys in the Boat - Review
The Boys in the Boat - Budget Unknown - 2 hours and 4 minutes
In 1936, Joe Rantz attended the University of Washington for engineering. He needs to pay for the 2nd half of this semester in two weeks. He finds day labor, but it's not enough. After engineering class, Joe's friend, Roger, tells him the rowing team will pay crew members and offer housing. Joe and Roger join dozens of young men. Coach Al Ulbrickson introduces the men to the other coaches, including Coach Thomas Bolles and the boatbuilder George Pocock. The coaches will decide who will join the varsity and junior varsity 8-men teams.
After a grueling tryout, Al picks Joe, Roger, and the other men. Al uses the junior varsity team to help train the varsity. However, Al notices that the junior team is beating the varsity. The president and Al have a meeting. Al needs more money to get the team new uniforms and equipment. The president says they need to win, and he can ask the former students for more money. But winning one race isn't enough. They need to win gold at the Olympics. After the JV team races in the regatta and beat the best time ever by seconds, Al gets an unorthodox idea. Instead of sending the varsity team to compete in Poughkeepsie, he can send JV. The president, donors, and varsity team angrily erupt after Al's announcement. However, he won't budge. Can the JV team prove Al right by making it to the Olympics and winning gold?
Based on The Boys in the Boat: Nine Americans and Their Epic Quest for Gold at the 1936 Berlin Olympics by Daniel James Brown, this film focuses on Al, Joe, and their obstacles (FTC Affiliate Disclaimer). Al went with his gut and made an unpopular choice. And he suffered along the way for it. Each time the team hit a new impossible milestone, someone moved the goalpost. Joe raised himself since he was 14. He has to learn how to depend on others and become one. The team has the USA and their university relying on a win. The USA wants prestige, and the university needs the donors' money. This movie will make you cheer in your seat, but you won't have the urge to delve deeper into this historic win.

Ferrari - Review
Ferrari - Budget of $95 million - 2 hours and 4 minutes
Enzo Ferrari quietly gets out of bed. He kisses his sleeping girlfriend, Lina, and son, Piero, goodbye and pushes his car down the street so it doesn't wake them. Enzo avoids reporters and enters his office to answer phone calls. Enzo's wife, Laura, demands to know why he was late. She doesn't care about his affairs but wants him to return home before the maid's shift starts. Enzo doesn't answer, so she pulls out a gun and fires near his head. She tells him that Ferarri is broke and leaves. He engineers the cars, and she manages the books. However, Enzo is racing more vehicles than he makes.
Ferrari made 98 cars, a far cry from their competitor. Enzo's advisors tell Enzo that Maserati has the same issues. Enzo takes the comparison as an insult. Maserati races cars to sell them, but Enzo sells cars to race them. His advisor tells Enzo to talk to manufacturers like Henry Ford to create an assembly partnership. Enzo hates partnerships because they slow innovation. Then, he asks Enzo to do one thing before meeting with other partners. Enzo must get Laura's share of the company for better bargaining power. Enzo isn't sure how to approach Laura with this subject. She started the company with him in 1947. However, he knows how to attract partners. They will run to him if he wins the Mille Miglia and manipulates the press. Enzo thinks the win could also convince Laura to sell. However, Enzo can't easily sway Laura because she discovers Enzo's secret. Can Enzo save Ferrari and his personal life? Or will he sacrifice one for the other?
Based on Enzo Ferrari: The Man and The Machine by Brock Yates, this movie is painfully slow but well-acted (FTC Affiliate Disclaimer). The film flips between Enzo being a genius, petty, and a cad. He had one focus - Ferrari Racing. Everything else comes second, even manufacturing. One moment in the movie will make you sit in shock and horror. Racing is a dangerous sport for the drivers and the spectators. The film didn't try to make any character the hero and clearly explained everyone's intentions and motivations. However, it didn't need to take 2 hours. This film is for people who like drama with a bit of action. Everyone else should wait for streaming.
I give it 3 out of 5 stars
That bad? - Enzo
That will be all - Laura
