I have made 6 turkeys in the last 6 weeks, I am baking the 6th turkey today. One of the things I hear is you repeat a lot of meals. This is true in the winter, however, many families eat the same things from the drive through. I cook whole foods from scratch 7 days a week, three times a day. I did this when I was a working mother. Tonight when, I post dinner, I will hear another turkey.
Routines can make or break a budget. We grow our pork, chicken, and beef. My husband loves turkey. Turkey that is priced 50 cents a pound also keeps us from spending 17 dollars on deli at deli counter. With your food budget, you have to open to buying other items to provide healthy, affordable food.
Most families have meals that they like in rotation. Pasta, soups, sandwiches, roasts, etc. If we find a bargain on quinoa, we are eating that for a while because the family loves it. Fish is not served often because half the family hates it and it is expensive in Colorado for the quality.
Diet restrictions and health issues can create the need for more expensive foods and time. I have one child who has issues gluten. I often make his side dishes differently. So, when I make HIS pasta,PIZZA, BREADS , his is gluten-free. I am often making two meals. The rest of the family doesn't like gluten-free pastas, and breads. Luckily, many of the things I make I can do two versions of easily. Our son loves turkey, and when I found turkey on sale without additives> Yes, there are turkey injected with gluten and other additives.
Frugal things that do not make sense, long term. Tires should be quality. We have all seen tires ripped up on the sid eof the road. Checking the treads is important. W ewere driving yesterday and saw a young male driver have a blow out. We stopped because he almost lost control. It turns out he had a flat and had a plug put in. The tire had been flattened by a a large bolt. A plug is not meant to be a permanent fix. There are times of course, one has to do these things at times.
Entertainment may have to change when you are on a budget. Movies may have to be Redbox or the library rather than going to the movies. Concerts and other large events may not be on the agenda. Our last concert was 400 dollars for 4 people. We were at Red Rocks. We went camping and packed all of our food to save on expenses. We go to a lot festivals that we attend free for a bit of time taking tickets and what not.
The public library continues to a great value (except ours, our library is having issues within itself.)Movies, music, exquipment and classes offered.
