Happy new Year. Our dog Stella has a new gentleman caller. Our backyard neighbor adopted a male golden retriever named George. George brings Stella gifts everyday. Stuffy toys, shoes, socks, and a watch. He whines at our front door presenting his treasures. I start with this because one of the best money savers for pet is supervision. George is always at my house. The other day he was nearly run over by UPS. I was able to get him put of the road. Pet supervison includes correcting their behavior, being aware of your breed's needs, etc. Many animals end up injured, ill, or dumped at the local animal shelter because the owner doesn't want to deal with their pet. Dogs are odd creatures, unlike cats who are as faithful to those who fill their bowls. I am thinking of adopting Hazel an elder dog who needs a home. Her owner died and she hates the shelter. I am not a dog person. I adore cats which is why we volunteer at the shelter. However, Hazel always comes to me. I think she likes that I am strict.
Routines will save you money in day to day life for countless reasons. On the same note, it is also important to be open to changing things up when prices and supply chains are interrrupted. One example is during the pandemic, flour, yeast and eggs were in short supply. I solved these problems by increasing our chicken flock, using flax seed for baking, grinding grains for flour, and sourdough for yeast.
Time is a value often overlooked in the budget equation. When, I was a full-time working single mother, there were many things I paid for because I didn't have the TIME. I paid to have my house cleaned so I could have that time for my kids. My career was physically and emotionally EXHAUSTING. It was important for me to be a present parent. There are times when you will be short on time and money. You may need to put time in to right the ship. Our rental was destroyed nearly 4 years ago. The cleanup would have been 40,000 dollars without the repairs needed. We put the time in.
Remember frugaility is not being to spend, it is about mindful spending. It is the kind of spending that improves your life. Frugal people do not buy debt. Credit cards, electronics, loans for vacation, or furniture are pointless debt. As a property manager, I see a lot of foolish spending and I often clean up those foolish purchases. Learn to enjoy your home and your automobiles by taking care of them. The reasons our grandparents had nice things were they made made mindful purchases and took care of them. Furniture has become disposable because we purchase those essentially cardboard pieces.
