Scrambled - Budget Unknown - 1 hour and 37 minutes
Nellie completed another epic bridesmaid dance at a wedding for her friend, Sheila. Nellie, high on Molly, openly admires her friend, Monroe. Monroe has a successful career, a wonderful husband, and has had a baby at 40. Monroe stops Nellie's gushing and explains how hard it was to get pregnant and the exorbitant cost. She knows Nellie is a party girl and demands to know Nellie's age. Nellie states her age is 34, and Monroe slaps her. She warns Nellie to freeze her eggs before it's too late.
Nellie eats dinner with her family, and they ask about her ex-boyfriend, Shawn. Nellie's father, Richard, likes Shawn and wants Nellie to settle down and have a family. He desires to be a grandfather. She reminds Richard the relationship is over. Then, Nellie mentions that her brother, Jesse, can give them grandkids, but Richard doesn't want Jesse to produce. Jesse agrees.
Nellie meets with a fertility doctor, and he diagnoses Nellie with Diminished Ovarian Reserve. He warns Nellie to reserve her eggs sooner rather than later. She will need $13,000 for the procedure. Nellie looks online for quick ways to make money but has to go to her family. Richard thinks she should return with Shawn and have a baby the old-fashioned way. He states that he doesn't want frozen grandchildren. Later, she reaches out to Jesse for help. He will loan her the money, but she has to pay it back in 2 months, or he will keep her eggs. Nellie agrees.
Nellie prepares for the shots and gets the rules. She can't drink, smoke, take drugs, exercise, or have sex during preparations. Nellie attends several baby showers, weddings, engagement parties, and reconnections. Her renaissance or crisis will force Nellie to be honest, share, and reflect on her decisions, past relationships, and motherhood.
Nellie is a fun-loving woman with a zest for life. She wants to live in every moment and believes she has the time to do it. That is until her friends remind her that her biological clock is ticking. Nellie expresses that she's not sure she wants to be a mother. However, he doesn't want the option taken from her if she meets the right man. This movie doesn't put flowers and bows on marriage and children. It discusses infidelity, miscarriage, and the statistics surrounding egg freezing. This film has more than one touching moment throughout Nellie's journey. Nellie finds comfort in a friend, family, a support group, and a stranger. However, it's everything she needs. And it will make your heart melt. This plot has the wit of Juno and the dialogue of Trainwreck (FTC Affiliate Disclaimer). It asks an important question without forcing an answer. Be prepared to self-reflect and heal.
