#NewComicsday and it's a great day to be a comic book enthusiast! The end of January and one step closer to the All-C's Spring expo who has a great guest line up and a few vendor tables available. Contact the store for details, as we dive into this week's fresh batch of comics. Kid Cudi introduces us to his version of the Moon Man with his Image debuting comic. Went to pieces over the last issue of Wolverine and excited to see if they continue the trend and DC lets us know what to expect with the new Power Girl one shot. Light week to close out January but that's ok because we've got five stacked high ready to fly:
Avengers: Twilight #2> With the clock ticking to New Year's Day, and the world against him, CAPTAIN AMERICA must build an army to save America! Will his surviving friends sign up, or is he going to have to lead the ragtag group called THE DEFENDERS against the expert military marksman known as BULLSEYE? (S) Chip Zdarsky (A) Daniel Acuna
Smurfs Take> Well that first issue was an unexpected surprise. Wasn't expecting that at all as we look at a much older Avengers team that we've seen in the past few years. Like the story idea and really excited to see where it goes, has a bit of an Earth X feel to it but believe it or not…better.
Duke #2> CODENAME G.I. JOE CONTINUES! Conrad Hauser, aka "Duke," is on the run from the very government he trusted, investigating secrets that may be More Than Meets The Eye. Now, he's about to meet the last person any G.I. JOE fan ever expected! Are they friend, foe, or in it for themselves? (S) Joshua Williamson (A) Tom Reilly
Smurfs Take> Great first issue! GI Joe with an edge! I can't believe I'm enjoying the Joe and Transformers titles this much, but they have just been so well done. It's a fun fresh take with great ideas as there is a clear departure from what we know with enough of the character that there's still a comfort without relighting too heavily on the nostalgia factor.
Incredible Hulk #8> THE EPIC CONCLUSION OF HULK'S THROWDOWN WITH THE WWII GHOST RIDER AND THE WAR DEVILS! The Personification of Rage and the Spirit of Vengeance have their own vengeful spirit to conquer! When the Hulk and the undead Ghost Rider of the past finally come face-to-face with the monstrosity controlling the war devils, a bone-crushing brawl follows! (S) Phillip Kennedy Johnson (A) Nic Klein
Smurfs Take> Liking the different Ghost Rider, not sure how long he's sticking around for but something different and without all of the Blaze baggage. The story itself is perfect as it blends the monsters into the story over the past few issues, and it's about time we get a closer look at them. Still uncertain about this new Hulk but like the fight between him and Banner, waiting from team buttons to come with an issue.
Batman and Robin Annual #1> Batman and Robin have gone through hell the last few months, so Bruce decides to take Damian on a camping trip to bond. But as they try to enjoy the great outdoors, they find a different kind of hunting ground…one that hunts the most dangerous game! Trapped and cut off from their weapons and backup, Batman and Robin must use their surroundings to hold off and take down some of DC's deadliest mercenaries! (S) Joshua Williamson (A) Howard Porter
Smurfs Take> I haven't been much of a Batfan for the past couple of years and usually consider the annuals a filler or throw away story. This however looks great as we get back to a classic feel that this book has been able to capture with a modern twist. I have like the dynamic between Damian and Bruce in the series so far, something they shouldn't have neglected for so long in my opinion, but I think it's a great way invite readers that might be on the fence about the title.
Dead X-Men #1> DEATH WAS ONLY THE BEGINNING! When the world turned against Krakoa, these five mutants lost their lives…but their mission as X-Men is just getting started. To preserve Xavier's dream, they must accomplish the impossible - or die again trying! Spinning out from RISE OF THE POWERS OF X, discover…who are the DEAD X-MEN?! (S) Steve Foxe (A) Vincenzo Carratu, Bernard Chang, Jonas Scharf
Smurfs Take> This has my attention. It does have a "Day's of Future Past" feel to it while fitting into the Krakoa story line. To be honest I like it when the X-Men are on the run, hiding more than out in the open because I think it fit's the teams dynamic waaaay better. I'm also digging the less mutants running around approach as we see the end of the Krakoa era that wasn't a big hit for me and knew it was doomed from the start; but I guess that was the point. So, the big question is, who's coming back?
