Mea Culpa - Budget Unknown - 2 hours and 0 minutes
Defense attorney Mea watches her husband, Kal, leave therapy early for his mother's birthday party. Mea understands his mother, Azalia, has cancer but feels that Kal bends to Azalia's every waking whim. After the session, Mea runs to the restaurant and greets the owner. He asks Mea to look into his friend's case. The state accused his friend, Zyair, of murdering his girlfriend and hiding the body. She agrees to do it if the owner brings a strong drink.
Mea meets Kal, his brother, Ray, Ray's wife, Charlise, and Azalia at the dinner party. Azalia invited Kal's ex-girlfriend, Jenna, to the festivities. She asks Jenna and Kal to sit beside each other and puts Mea at the end of the table. Mea ignores Azalia's verbal jabs to keep the peace. She confronts Kal on the way home about the gift he gave Azalia. Kal confesses that he sold Mea's piano for the diamond watch. Mea can't hide her fury. They have had mounting money problems since Kal lost his job as an anesthesiologist because of his drug addiction. He hasn't told his family. Also, they are covering Azalia's medical bills. Kal promises to do better, go to his meetings, and buy Mea another piano.
Mea meets with Zyair and becomes intrigued with the artist. She reads through his case and takes it home. Kal tells Mea she can't take the case because Ray is the district attorney. Mea reminds Kal about the bills and takes the job.
Mea and Ray meet with the judge and disclose their in-law relationship. Neither one is willing to back down, so the judge agrees to let them try the case. Mea decides to meet Zyair, but he doesn't want to come to her office, so she travels to his home. Mea ignores her desires and questions Zyair about his relationship, the evidence in his loft, and a tape of his girlfriend pleading for help. Zyair maintains his innocence and begs Mea to take his case. She agrees to take it and win but makes Zyair promise not to lie. He does.
Mea attends Sunday dinner with Kal's family. Ray and Azalia tell her to drop Zyair's case. Ray wants to run for office and use Zyair's case to make voters perceive him as tough on crime. When Mea refuses, Azalia calls Mea selfish and a gold digger. Kal finally confessed to losing his job and drug addiction. Azalia blames Mea for overworking him. Mea leaves in disgust. She meets with Zyair but doesn't give in to his flirting. That is, until her friend, private investigator Jimmy, calls. Jimmy helped Mea uncover Kal's past issues, and today continues to follow Kal for Mea. Jimmy took pictures of Kal going into a hotel room with Jenna. Mea decides to spend the night with Zyair for revenge. Mea's payback will rain an avalanche of secrets and pain for herself, her family, and Zyair.
Directed and written by Tyler Perry, this movie has all the hallmarks of his previous works. Mea and Kal are an unhappy couple with a meddling family. Then, a handsome stranger enters with all the qualities Mea wants in a man. He is strong, confident, and passionate. She tries to resist him, but fans know she will cave. Once Mea's secrets come to life, the movie has the salacious writing of The Have and Have Nots. This short ending saves this movie and puts your jaw on the floor. This film isn't for kids or teens, but it will entertain adult fans of the genre.
