My Fave Time Saving Grocery Hack

Hi read,

Does this scene look familiar to you?

You loaded up all of your kids on Sunday and went to the grocery store. After walking up and down every aisle, you check out and it costs WAY more than you expected. But by Wednesday, you realize you forgot a few things and you didn't plan dinner for Thursday. Takeout time!

Or maybe this...

You did your weekly online grocery order as usual. You thought you had remembered everything, but within 30 minutes of submitting the order you have already realized you forgot a handful of must-have items. Time for another time-consuming order.

That last one is totally me. I used to submit my Wal-Mart order on Monday, then have to do a Target pick up on Tuesday or Wednesday for all of the things I forgot. That takes time, people! I was wasting at least an extra hour and a half a week just because I had forgotten to add something critical to the order the first time.

Now I've refined my system to avoid this and it almost always works! Here are my steps.

  • Order from a store that allows you to edit your order after submitting. I order from Wal-Mart because I can add items to my order up to a few hours before my pickup/delivery window. It's awesome. I know Target and Safeway don't have this functionality.
  • Create a "Regular Weekly" list that has all of your critical items for the week. I include things on this list even when I may not need them in a given week. I'd rather have something and not need it than the other way around. I'm more careful with perishables. I'm not at all careful with non-perishables because I can just store them until they're needed. I usually add everything to my cart and then take my phone or laptop to the kitchen and delete anything I don't need that week.
  • Create a list for each common meal you cook. Mine are carnitas and salmon. I make these almost every week and they have their own list. Other frequent meals like chili or po-boys also have a list. This way I'm not looking for the recipe every single time. I also include sides in this list. For example, I usually make cauliflower and broccoli with salmon. Those are on the salmon list so I don't forget.
  • Add pantry restock items as you go. As soon as I realize I'm out of a common staple item like syrup, spices, oatmeal, etc. I will add it to my basket. It just sits there all week until I'm ready to do my next order. This ensure I don't forget and it's quick to do.

This system has helped me avoid countless last-minute Target runs. The Target order pickup can get pretty slow on weekday evenings and I don't have that kind of time!

Do you have a grocery annoyance or hack? Hit reply. I would love to hear it!
