I've just begun with my journey of healing from my autoimmune deficiency and thyroid dysfunction. I've been living with my suffering off, and on, for many years, but when I went into near-total shutdown earlier this month, I knew it was time to take this situation way more seriously. I've always been an active woman, up for fun adventures, hiking, geocaching, flying to visit far-away grandkids and staying for long visits. When our two oldest daughters were attending Thomas Aquinas in California, we had some of the best adventures in our lives, hiking up into the national forest nearby the campus, visiting the Sequoia National Park, taking a cruise to the Channel Islands, and watching the dolphins "run" with the ship, visiting the seaside as often as possible (but not nearly often enough for this self-proclaimed "beach bum!). And, as I mentioned in a previous post, hiking down into the Grand Canyon many years ago, and spending the night at phantom Ranch, with an ice cold shower and locked up calf muscles making the adventure more "real!" I'm still in my early 60's, so I feel like there are a lot more adventures left for me.
The increased suffering that I've been experiencing lately, as well as the lure of possible, further adventures was enough to help me get serious about healing. You might be wondering what my initial steps are looking like. Well, first of all, I went on our local libraries web site and started searching for books. There are quite a few on the subjects of adrenal and autoimmune suffering. A lot of people are dealing with a body gone awry, because the world is filled with toxins these days, and many of us are hypersensitive to toxins of any type. What I have discovered in just a short time is that, the answer is in the food we eat. A clean diet (i.e., buying organic as much as possible), and the right kinds of healing foods, is the path to healing. Well, that, and beans….lots of beans!
So, here I am, just 3 weeks into taking this seriously, and I'm already noticing some of the signs of my body trying to detox. I'm getting mild headaches nearly every day. Most detox practitioners, naturopathic doctors, gurus, whatever you want to call them, they all agree that headaches are a sign of toxin die-off. I'm also going to the bathroom more often, just passing more liquid and solid waste from my body on a daily basis. (I have been drinking a lot of the detox "teas," particularly the dandelion root variety, and I know that's one of the most effective options to utilize. Now I'm thinking that I need to get swing by our local warehouse store and stock up on TP for the coming months! (Put that in the category of "detoxing conundrums that you might not think of!) 🤣
But, back to the main point, which I think is this, "food is not your enemy, unless you allow it to be."
Start your own healing plan by checking out the resources available at your library. Look for healthy, healing recipes, then get your butt to the grocery store (or your local, organic farmer's market and stock up on healing foods. Always by organic if possible. If prices are too high for you to buy organic, then just get into the habit of thoroughly rinsing your food. All of those organic salads that say, "washed and ready to eat"? Don't believe it. Rinse them more, for longer time periods, using filtered water, if possible. Scrub your organic potatoes until their "eyes" pop out, and rinse those beans until they shine. It does make a difference, and, if you are one of those people, who (like me) have an extreme sensitivity to the herbicides and pesticides used abundantly in standard farming practicing, a bit of extra rinsing goes a long way to help protect your health. I've added a photo of two of my favorite (so far) self help and self-healing cookbooks, But you can also search online for practitioners who have started online communities to help people like me find healing. I don't follow any of them, because there's usually a fee involved. I just ask my oldest daughter, who shares all of her researched advice with me for free! She tells me what supplements to buy, and how much I should take of each one, because she started the healing process a long time ago, and has had great success and experienced bountiful healing. I'm hoping to be able to say the same thing, maybe in another year or so, but, in the meantime, I have been feeling A LOT better the past few days, probably just because I've been resting, and eating my three servings of beans every day. I'll take whatever positive results that come my way, and use them as encouragement to carry on, because I truly want to be healthy again. And , if I can convince my husband that a week at the beach would really help me, then I will be the most blissful, gray-haired lady you've ever seen in a lounging in a beach chair, soaking up some much needed sunshine and negative ions for a little extra help with my healing. It's worth a try, right?
