As someone who has always put their children first, this memoir didnn't sit well with me. That is my bias about mother hood, I acknowledge it. Another issue, i have had my property stolen, it is a violation.
This was a bookclub pick that my friends on the East coast over Facetime. I stugggled with the fact that she was using when she was on bail and she smuggled drugs in side her body into jail. Her personality traits are not likable. Lara was given a pretty sweet plea deal . She could have done 27 years, instead, she was given a light sentence. A year. She had over 32 felony charges.I don't think she shows enough remorse. I found a lack of depth and inttrospection. Lara has a boastful, almost silly way she was "controlling the G space in the jail. I think Lara should have received 5 years, 1 year in a halfway house, and 10 years probation.
Lara was lucky that she was able to have a life when it was over. She had been in treatment before this. Lara had 6 years of soberity. So, she knew how to get into recovery. She had little respect for her children's stepmother who stepped in and was mothering the ex-husband's children. Not many women would do that, and not many women would take in the child that is not their husband's. Part of recovery is owning your faults and being grateful for those who stood up at the plate for your children. Darcy was a childless woman who took on 4 children because their mother was ill. One can see the value in a
There are things I do agree about what she has written. There is a need for jail reform: clean water, fresh food, proper spacing of inmates, mental services, and getting the drugs out of prision. Race, and education absolutely comes into play for sentencing and treatment.
My take on addiction is there mandatory and uniform treatment that is paid for by the government. Petty theft should be treated differently than felonies. If a child or children are involved the penalties needs to be harsher. We need to look at each case individually and sentence on differnt levels.
My husband has listened to me rant over this book this week. He smiled and said, "Are you dumping this book club too? I smiled and said "No, I am selecting the next book, and it won't be an Oprah pick.
