I read a news article a couple of days ago about a bill in Congress that's going to be voted on soon, regarding a permanent "Daylight Savings Time." Meaning, no more switching back and forth. Such an idea has been attempted a few times in the past, but never made it through passage. As I sit here today, feeling sluggish and out of sorts, I'm blaming it all on the weekend time change. I knew it was coming, but forgot to write myself a reminder note. When my husband woke up, he opened the door to the cat room, and I was rudely and confusingly awakened by cats walking on me. I could not figure out what was going on, thought I was stuck in some weird, life-like dream. I'm already suffering from fatigue and confusion from my autoimmune health issues, so I didn't really need any more of that. Needless to say, I started out on the wrong foot yesterday.
Nobody with babies or toddlers likes the time change, especially if they're committed to weekly Church attendance. On the morning after the time changes, we always see a young family or two arriving late, or early, depending on which seasonal time change we've just wrangled with. It's just a dumb idea! 63% of Americans think that we should end the time change plan, and stay on Daylight Savings time year round
The time change messes with our body's natural rhythms, and the days following a time change bring on a documented increase of medical emergencies, such as heart attacks and strokes. Sleep deprivation from losing an hour of sleep can affect our concentration and focus, leading to less productivity at work, and even unsafe driving. And the ideas behind the time change are also pretty antiquated (Thanks a lot for that annoying brainstorm, Benjamin Franklin!)
Let's get into the groove of a new millennium by putting an to this dangerous practice. If your kids are at the bus stop early, buy them reflective jackets and a flashlight, or keep them inside your car until the bus comes, for crying out loud! That is not enough of a reason to keep the twice yearly time changes that bring about all kinds of suffering across The United States of America! Let the people vote on this matter! (I'm just noticing that I am very cranky about this subject, and using lots of exclamation points, a clear sign that I am suffering from serious stress and sleep deprivation from the switch to Daylight Savings Time. Do us all a favor, Congress, and pass this bill. And, if Ben Franklin rolls over in his grave at its passing, he DESERVES to be wakened! The Senate had already passed the bill, Come on, House of representatives! We need more sunshine in the evening, and no more twice annual time changes. Woot Woot!
