A neighbor recently stopped by and joined me for conversation on the front porch. He was sporting a pair of New Balance shoes. To say that they were outstanding is an understatement. I asked permission to take a picture of his shoes and told him he'd probably soon appear in one of my blogs.
It was nice having someone stop by to sit on the front porch to visit. When we had the house built, I was hopeful the front porch would be inviting to neighbors as they walked by. When I was a kid growing up, we had lawn chairs in the front yard that often became a place of conversation for my parents and other adults in the neighborhood.
When the neighbor joined me on the front porch, I had the thought that only secure men wear bright orange walking shoes. As I write those words, the phrase "walking shoes" seems strange to me. For what else would shoes be worn?
My neighbor is a fair-weather golfer. He isn't going to bundle up and play golf in cold weather. I can't say that I blame him. If cold weather calls me by name, it will be associated to a ski lift in the Rocky Mountains, not the golf course that provides a picturesque view from my home.
My twin brother loved to play golf. The activity never resonated with me. That being said, my first date with the General was to play miniature golf. The miniature golf course in Odessa was also a nice place for conversation; not to be confused with a real game of golf.
I suspect that my oldest granddaughter will avoid miniature golf courses going forward. The family outing to play miniature golf left her hospitalized. Her overly zealous younger brother accidently hit her in the eye with the swing of his golf club.
I occasionally see a golfer approaching the 13th green behind our home that doesn't seem to be having an enjoyable time. Seriously, why would one invest time in something that left them miserable and frustrated? Life is too short to invest time in things that are not enjoyable.
The conversation with my neighbor provided information that came as a complete surprise. We were talking about how quickly life seems to flyby. One day you are young and find yourself with a wife and children while pursuing a career path. The next day you are remembering how you used to fill your time and asking how life could go by so quickly?
Somehow the subject of cars came up. He said that after he graduated from college and went to work as engineer, the first purchase he made was a new Porsche 911. Wow! That took me by surprise. He is four years younger than me and his car differed pretty dramatically from the Volkswagen I was driving.
I didn't ask what color, so I found the picture of one that would match is New Balance shoes.
