#NewComicsday and it's a great day to be a comic book enthusiast! Something for everyone as Pooh faces off against Bambi this week by Zenescope. Marvel running strong with Spider-Punk and Wolverine still dealing with Sabretooth. DC is more of a Bat-focus so don't miss the Flash in all of that and Image has Feral and Six Fingers that have been great. Free Comic Book Day is close at hand, be sure to get what you need and some special deals from our sponsor All C's Collectibles; but for now, we've got five stacked high ready to fly!
Ultimate Spider-Man #4> WHO IS THE GREEN GOBLIN? Peter Parker's secret life starts fraying the edges of his personal life! J. Jonah Jameson and Ben Parker's pursuit of truth - or, at least, the news - stirs unrest with the world at large… And now that Spider-Man may not have to operate alone, the real work of rebuilding this corrupt world can begin! (S) Jonathan Hickman (A) David Messina
Smurfs Take> I never realized I missed the mystery that would sometimes revolve around a new villain in the pages of Spider-Man. On top of that, a Spider-Man with a full family and understanding his powers is more fun than I could have imagined while we see a whole new Spiderverse full of characters that have faded from the main title. Great job by the entire creative team that really understands Spidey.
Duke #5> MINISERIES FINALE
Codename: G.I. Joe Is Here
Duke has been betrayed by his allies and hunted by new enemies.
The time has come for Duke to start fighting for something bigger than his country. Bigger than he ever could have imagined.
Get ready for the last page shocker that no one will see coming! (S) Joshua Williamson (A) Tom Reilly Jordie Bellaire
Smurfs Take> I've never liked Doctor Mindbender….there I said it. And to have him replace Destro like they did annoyed me to no end but to have Destro kind of lurking in the shadows with a full Dr. Claw treatment is perfect. Then. There's Duke. Who was alright, (was more of a Flint guy) but in this version is great and can appreciate his dedication and sheer will of getting things done. The best blend of old, new, familiar, action figures, and more! Have loved this little step backwards in time and best of all we still haven't got to the Transformers yet creating the perfect buildup.
Darth Maul: Black, White, & Red #1> DARTH MAUL STARS IN HIS VERY OWN HORROR BLOCKBUSTER! A prison ship - transporting a cult known as the FINAL OCCULTATION - goes offline, and DARTH MAUL is sent by PALPATINE to investigate. What he finds on board is the stuff of nightmares!!! It's up to him to stop this profoundly dark and unstable force that wishes to bring chaos to the galaxy. (S) Benjamin Percy (A) Stefano Raffaele
Smurfs Take> If there's one thing most nerds can agree on it's "They shouldn't have killed Maul off in the first movie". But at least they've tried to fix that mistake over the years, and this looks to be the most promising of them all. The BW&R series has been a great approach for short powerful stories with a way to give the reader a fun ride while expanding the characters a bit. This is a perfect opportunity for just that because if you haven't read some of the novels you might not be as familiar with Maul as you could be and the terror he was to the Jedi.
Penguin #9> LAST MARCH OF THE PENGUINS – Part One
The Penguin's return to Gotham City has been a homecoming in more ways than one! Meeting his ruthless, bloodthirsty twin children–the ones who inherited his empire, including the Iceberg Lounge–is a family reunion for the ages! (Oh, and it's bloody!) (S) Tom King (A) Rajael De Latorre
Smurfs Take> I've enjoyed this series a lot more than I gave it credit for as we take a deep dive into the day and the life of the Penguin. I've missed a lot of the older Batman villains now that the Joker fatigue has fully set in, and I hope to see them return to the Batman pages one day. In the meanwhile, this has been a better read than the main title has been with some great unexpected turns.
GODS #7> Dimitri is an orphan who was born in the Cosmodrome. Out there somewhere is what he's been looking for his whole life. The way in is the way through. All you have to do is listen for the signal. (S) Jonathan Hickman (A) Valerio Schiti
Smurfs Take> You know it's a big week when this is rounding out the top 5. This has been spectacular! Great cosmic/Sci-Fi storytelling in progress here and it's something Marvel has been missing for a long time now. Absolutely epic!
