Back in 2014 I was the head wrestling coach at another high school and had built the team into a winner. We were a consistent playoff team and were placing kids in the regional and state events yearly. I had seven seniors back and was the preseason #2 ranked team coming back. Five of those seven guys were state qualifiers and placers so we were primed to make a big run at a state title for the team and school. With that pre-story told, myself and the principal at the time were not seeing eye to eye on some things going on in the school building and with the discipline or lack of in the school.

I decided to leave that program and walk away from a potential state title to go to another school as an assistant coach. It was a bold move and many did not understand why I did it and threw away the opportunity to get a state title. Those are never guaranteed and rare to get as a coach or team. I gave my notice and honestly did not know where I was landing in August as a teacher and coach but I went on my faith and my wife told me to walk away and figure it out. Two days after resigning from that school and job. I ran into a friend of mine and long time rival coach at Walmart.
Just happened to be that he needed an assistant coach for football and this was at my current spot which is one of the most traditional football teams in NC with 8 state titles. It was a shot in the arm and a great opportunity. I interviewed and was hired on the spot by the principal to teach business classes and coach football, wrestling and possibly softball. I forgot to mention I was a long time head softball coach as well (9 seasons). I joined the school and both staffs and here is where the decision ended up huge for me. I had walked away from a great opportunity and the program I had built into a winner.

I joined the wrestling program as the head assistant coach with my good buddy who was also a football assistant. I worked with him for two seasons and he left the school for his own reasons and I took over the program. We won a state title in 2014 and was runner-up in 2015. Then we lost nine seniors so when I took over the program was almost a start over with younger kids and we had a couple of tough seasons. Then things began to click again. I added some great help and got more kids out. I put a plan in place and now we are coming off four straight conference titles, several top 4 finishes in states, 3 state champs and multiple state placers.

This is a lot of information, but the point is that sometimes we make a move in life and it pays off. Other times it does not. We have to go off of our gut feeling and have faith in ourselves and the Lord that things will work out. As I type this response, after seven more seasons as a high school head coach. Today, I meet with a great group of seniors and all my returners to announce that I once again am stepping out on faith and have coached my last wrestling season (for now). 24 years of off season workouts in the spring and fall. 24 seasons of every Saturday from November 1 to March 1. It has been a grind and something I have enjoyed. I am tired and will see what happens next with the next move that hopefully will pay off and I am sure I will not regret it!
