It's Friday again! Hoorah for the last day of the work week! Here on Frugal Friday, we discuss topics that are helpful in being frugal and saving money! Today's topic is about home-staying home to be exact.
It's not flashy to spend the weekend at home, is it? It's not a "fun topic" to discuss when back at work on Monday morning. In fact, it sounds almost boring to say that staying home is my preference for the weekend, but it is!
Here in our area, and I bet in yours, too, the weekend is when all the stores are crowded and so are the sites or recreational things to do. The traffic here is quite miserable on the weekends. And so, for these reasons, if I can stay near home on Saturday and Sunday, I do!
This used to be a way of life. Mom did the grocery shopping during the week, while we were at school. Dad stopped by the store on the way home if needed for necessities. By the weekend, they were ready for some outdoor time, digging in the garden and moving a plant now and then! My sweet parents spent weekends working on the home, not on finding new ways to spend money! My dad washed the cars or maintained the yard. Mom spent time with him or cleaned house. They often had projects they wanted to work on together! It was a simpler time.
I have a home-based hobby, but I also enjoy cleaning and organizing on weekends. I plan for yummy breakfasts, which isn't something we have much time for on weekdays. In fact, shopping for food close to the end of the week means I have lunches and dinners at home that rival our best restaurant options. This keeps us from spending funds that should be put towards other things! I enjoy spending time with Doc over the weekend, helping him in whatever ways I can. Some weekends he works on college related work, and I find things to do in the office with him!
I challenge you to go back to spending your weekends at home and see if that changes the amount of money spent! It's very frugal to stay at home and to eat at home. It's also very frugal to spend time on the house and yard. I like to plan things for the weekend that are different than my everyday chores, and more recreational in nature, like getting outside when weather permits! Wishing you all a good weekend!
