Our daughter has been saving for a computer. She is not a saver by nature. We had stopped at the mall to pick up the kid's glasses. We stopped at Target. I had circle rewards and a 10 % saving on my Target app. The savings for her turned out to be 95 dollars. I made a deal with her. If she used my circle rewards and 10%, she needed to put the 95 dollars into her savings account. She was a bit annoyed with me. I reminded her she could spend all her money on the laptop, wait, and save up more, or she could have money left. In the end, she decided to buy the laptop and put the savings into her savings account. This method, I have used throughout my adult life, I buy something on sale and put the difference into savings.
Being prepared to have meals on the road during travel is not only a money saver but may be the only option for a meal in some areas. During our horrible trip, the third night, we had planned to have dinner out. There was a power outage and not a grocery store for 50 miles. All the eateries were closed. If I had not prepared meals, the only option would have been 12-dollar frozen meals.
School starts next week. I have been meal-prepping high-protein breakfast options that are 1.50 a serving or less.
tofu scrambles
traditional egg breakfast sandwiches and burritos
green smoothies
yogurt fruit parfaits
waffle/sausage bentos
matcha tea/protein powder flax seed puddings(these were a hard no for me).
Last year, I found the hard editions for the children's coursework. We are supplied with digital formats from the school. If I had waited to the last moments I would have paid 600 dollars per child. I ended up paying 60 for both children.
Cook with "free" ingredients when you can. Mindful use of ingredients to extend other meals.
Today is a great example Clean out the fridge nachos
leftover plant-based cheese sauce
leftover chicken
black olives
avocado
corn tortillas
I do this often when I am making lunches. I create casseroles or soups.
Fruit salad pops
I store leftover fruit in the freezer. I added a fruit salad that I froze with a bit of water, sweetener, and coconut milk. I put the mixture into pop molds. Easy.
Oranges are one of the things I overbuy. Everyone will eat a bunch on day one. I squeeze them and grate the peel. I put it in the freezer. This is the beginning of many Asian dishes. Orange chicken, etc.
Look at the workload for the frugal things you do. I can't stand preparing food for road trips, however, it keeps my family fed. I usually eat fruit and vegetables. I prefer my meals to be freshly prepared and a variety. So, for myself, the work is not worth it for my meals.
