The problem of moral responsibilities of the individual still, surfacing here, the DECENCY of people needs to be, questioned! Off of the Front Page Sections, translated…
The patrol officer, Shih of Nangang Substation was suspected of gambling with the confiscated stolen money of over $540,000N.T. to gamble in the games of mahjong, investing in the virtual currencies, and betting on the sports, in a short three months, he'd lost all the money, until the substation started chasing where the funds went, he'd tried to borrow the money to put it back. Yesterday the Shihlin D.A.'s Office charged the officer for obtaining properties confiscated by the police.
The indictment stated, that Shih is a sergeant of the detective squad, before he made detective, he was addicted to gambling, and his habit worsened as he was promoted to detective, in the money laundering case he worked back in 2022, he'd confiscated the stolen funds of $548,300N.T.s but never turned it in, was suspected of taking the funds to gamble on mahjong, virtual currencies, betting on sports, that if he'd won, he'd, put all his cash in, tried to make more, and in a short three months, he'd lost every dollar.
Shih pleaded guilty, claimed that he was taking the stolen cash out of the evidence locker, after his coworker testified, he was going to turn it in to the Hsinbei Police Stolen Properties locker, but the court session ran too late, he'd not checked the evidence back in, kept it in his car, and several days, he had a relapse of his gambling habit, and "moved the stolen money as his gambling fund".
He'd stated, that because of his being hard on economic difficulty, he couldn't get the funds back, until in March of 2022, when the substation asked about the stolen funds, he'd worried about getting sent to prison, he'd asked his friend to borrow $550,000N.T.s; on the 21st of the same month, he'd, made up for the $548,300N.T. he'd taken out back into the lockers, but because the stolen cash was made up of bills, coins, that wasn't identical to the documentations of the funds being confiscated, there was the missing ten dollar and fifty dollar coins from the batch, proved that he'd used the confiscated fund privately.
The D.A. found, that Shih works as a police officer, because of his gambling habit, he'd let greed get the best of him, used the confiscated stolen amount as his resources for gambling, damaging the reputation of the police, and, Shih had refused to check the personal data for his debtors, only gave the data for the arrest warrants, there was no evidence of other misdemeanors from him; the case is prosecuted on encroachment, and because he'd confessed, and turned back what he'd taken, the D.A. asked the courts to give him a reduced sentence, suggested for a set amount of prison time.
And so, despite how this cop had put back what he took, it still did NOT erase the fact that he took the money out, but the law is lenient toward this, because he had admitted to wrongdoing, and had, made up for it, with a total disregard of how he'd broken the law as a law enforcement officer, set a bad example, which should give him a heavier sentence, but they didn't.
