I am thrilled to have received the next book in the Mothers of Xsan series - thank you Highwater Press and @zgstories for the gifted copy of The Wolf Mother. I know my students who can't get enough books about animal facts are going to pore over it.

Written by Hetxw'ms Gyetxw (Brett D. Huson) and illustrated by Natasha Donovan, The Wolf Mother tells the story of the life cycle of the wolf and its contribution to a healthy ecosystem. Filled with information about the Gitxsan Nation -- Indigenous peoples from the unceded territories of the Northwestern Interior of B.C.-- it teaches about the Nation's matrilineal line. The four clans of the Gitxsan Nation are the Frog, Eagle, Fireweed, and, as you guessed from today's book recommendation, the Wolf.

Donovan's illustrations are again, beautifully detailed, with gorgeous wintery shadows. This non-fiction story is written so that we follow a young pup growing up, leaving its pack, joining a new one, and raising her own pups. The series always includes definitions of trickier terms, and teaches respect for animals that we may have some fear of. I look forward to seeing the next one, The Raven Mother, in 2022.
