Hi read, How are you today? How is your week going? How is it already the week before Thanksgiving?!? It's like time sped this year after the year that lasted forever. Before we go into the tips to help you stay healthy this holiday season, I want to say thank you for being part of this community. Thank you for supporting Mompowerment. Thank you for sharing these positive and actional ideas. We appreciate you! And now on to the topics you want to read about! I'm thrilled to share tips from my good friend, Amanda Smallwood, a nutritional therapist and the first of many experts Mompowerment will be collaborating with. I've known her for more than 20 years (and she was even my roommate when we lived in New York City many moons ago). Amanda's got some amazing advice for staying healthy this holiday season and supporting your immune system. What I love the most about her tips is that they're practical. She's not saying to avoid alcohol and sweets. She's giving strategies to incorporate them without going overboard. We've got 5 tips to share today: Don't eat sweets on an empty stomach. It can be hard to resist sweets, especially if you have a sweet tooth like I do. Eat sweets as a dessert only and not as a snack. Have a meal before having dessert so you eat less and the food in your stomach will slow the absorption of sugar into your body. Limit your portion size. When it's time for dessert, opt for half a portion and take small bites. Consider using a small spoon to help with this. Often a small taste of dessert is enough to satisfy the cravings for something sweet. Alternate your drinks. After every alcoholic beverage, drink a non-alcoholic beverage. Sparkling water mixed with a variety of fruit or herbs (like mint) is bubbly, alcohol-free, and contains little (or no) sugar. Mash the fruit and/or herbs for a stronger flavor. Eat before you drink. It's important to eat before drinking alcohol, and nothing too light. Food in your stomach slows the absorption of alcohol in your system. This makes it easier for your body to process the alcohol and can decrease some of the strain on your body and immune system. Additionally, you are likely to drink more slowly if you're not hungry. First thing in the morning have water. Have a glass of warm (or room temperature) water on an empty stomach first thing in the morning. Make it a habit to have a glass of water before your day even starts! It's believed that drinking warm water on an empty stomach can support metabolism and detoxification (and who doesn't need these during the holidays!). You can read more or go more in-depth on Amanda's Mompowerment blog post. And there is a bonus for Mompowerment mamas. Amanda is launching a group course in early 2022 and she's got special pricing for you. Reply with "I'm interested" and I'll send you the details. Find a tip in here that you're going to use? We'd love to know! Or if you have tips that help you during the holiday, we're always interested in new ideas! As always, let us know if there is an area you're struggling with. Happy Thanksgiving!
