House of Gucci - Budget of $75 million - 2 hours and 37 minutes
Patrizia Reggiani sits on a stool and asks the man behind the bar for a drink. He tells her he isn't the bartender but makes her drink anyway. When she asks his name, he tells Patrizia he is Maurizio Gucci. She stands in awe because she knows it well. Maurizio is the heir to half of the Gucci fashion empire. They dance the night away, but he leaves. The next day, Patrizia pretends to bump into him at the library. Maurizio studies law at the local college and has no plans on joining the family business. Before he can drive away, Patrizia writes her number on his windshield and leaves. A few days later, Maurizio calls the feisty brunette to make a date.
After a brief courtship, Maurizio introduces Patrizia to his father, Rodolfo. Patrizia tries to impress Rodolfo, but he sees her as a simple golddigger. Rodolfo tells Maurizio to date Patrizia but never marry her. If he marries her, Rodolfo will cut him off. For the first time, Maurizio stands up to Rodolfo and marries Patrizia. Maurizio works at Patrizia's father's trucking company cleaning cars until Maurizio gets a call from his uncle, Aldo. Aldo doesn't think his son, Paolo, is ready to take over Gucci. So he wants to groom Maurizio without Paolo or Rodolfo's knowledge. Patrizia tells Maurizio to take the deal and claim his birthright. Although Maurizio is happy working at the trucking company, he adheres to his wife. Notwithstanding, Rodolfo doesn't welcome Maurizio or Patrizia back into his life until they have their first child. With Rodolfo's illness, he wants his son by his side. This decision is the next step to the top. Not for Maurizio, but for Patrizia. She will do anything to help Maurizio succeed, secure the empire, and remain a Gucci.
Based on The House of Gucci: a True Story of Murder, Madness, Glamour, and Greed by Sara Gay Forden, this movie feels like a high-end Deadly Women episode (FTC Affiliate Disclaimer). Accents aside, the viewer has to determine if Patrizia was a golddigger, extremely ambitious, or both. But, the family never considered her a Gucci. As she helps Maurizio climb up the ladder, forge signatures, and predict traitors, Patrizia remains background. Don't forget, Patrizia says she isn't ethical. Patrizia does what it takes to get ahead and plows over anyone who stands in her way. She doesn't kid herself about who she is, only what she will become. Sadly, Maurizio learns the brilliance and deadly nature of Patrizia at the end.
