One of the hardest yet most vital actions social workers can take is to step back and allow crossover youth, their families, and their communities take the lead in voicing what is best for them, Gilbreath says. "Those closest to the pain should be closest to the power. As social workers, we are often not close to the pain," she says. "We might have the degree, but we might not have the knowledge.
