There are a number of different steps that you can take in order to train Millenials into leaders more effectively. This includes the following:

  • Match them up with a mentor – The first step you should consider is matching up a millennial with a mentor. Millennials want to be teamed up with mentors. The correct mentor can be the key to unlocking the most development within the next big leader in your business. If you short-cut the matching process, though, this is only going to hurt you in the long run. You should allow employees to try out a few different mentors before they are matched up or, at the very least, make sure that there is a grace period.
  • Strengthen emotional intelligence – When managing and leading other employees, a strong emotional regulation is pivotal. This is one of the main types of skills needed by non-profit leaders and profit leaders. Even prior to stepping into a role of leader, having a solid emotional base is going to enable your workforce to be more productive.
  • Help employees to have greater self-awareness – Aside from providing mentors, it is also important to plant self-awareness. Self-awareness is one of the main indicators when it comes to future success. You must make sure that all workers have the ability to have self-awareness. Having the ability to acknowledge weaknesses and strengths is the foundation of being a great leader. You should ensure that all of your employees are empowered with self-awareness, especially those who are the future leaders of your business.
  • Embed company DNA – In addition to the tips that have already been mentioned, it is important to embed company DNA. Most businesses teach purposes, mission, and values during the onboarding period. However, you need to go deeper than this. So that future leaders understand the DNA of your company, you need to teach them about expected culture. Training and teaching in numerous ways on plans, goals, expectations, language, and everything else in between will make this happen.
  • Exercise failure – Millennials need to learn how to fail because leadership is not always going to be successful. There are always going to be hurdles along the way; it is not going to plain sailing all of the time. Failure is something that teams are going to encounter all of the time. The leader's ability to handle failure and work through it is going to enable them to lead effectively. If you help future leaders to learn how to work through failure properly, you will play a huge role in just how successful they are in the future.
  • Capitalize on strengths – Last but not least, there has been a lot of information said on how playing towards the strengths of your employees will be beneficial. It is important that you teach your employees the value of this. Great leaders do not need to be good at everything. They need to recognize what they are good at in order to make sure that they know how to use these strengths to an optimal level.
