[New post] My Solo Ice Cream Date Didn’t Turn Out So Nice

On a beautiful Friday afternoon, I got a bunch of messages from one of my coworkers who knows me as the ice cream junkie that I am.
Imagine my excitement when I opened his messages and saw that he had sent IG links to three different ice cream spots in Lagos. I clicked on one of the links he had forwarded, and I immediately thought to myself, "I am definitely going to this place (broke or not )" Like finally, a good ice cream spot on the mainland!!! (people on the mainland deserve nice things too )
This was my exact reaction to his message:
I'm already ashamed of myself, please don't judge me.
Moving on, I had a work thing that required me to leave my house to the exact same location as the ice cream spot. Imagine my excitement at this point; like what would I tell my kids if I don't branch there? What would be my excuse? I was finally going on a solo ice cream date!
There I was, all giddy and whatnot, on my way to 'Softs ice cream' located at G.R.A. Let me also mention that the night before, I had camped on their IG page, so I knew exactly where I was headed and what to anticipate (anticipating enjoyment). And, as expected, the space was aesthetically pleasing (if you like the color pink) But what does the color pink have to do with ice cream anyway? (that should've been the first red flag, no?)
Despite the shooting pains in my uterus, nothing was going to stop me from having a good time. I was thrilled; nothing, to be honest, gets me as excited as ice cream. I was served my first breakfast when the lady at the counter mentioned that they didn't have vanilla flavors available (another red flag abi? But no, I let my excitement cloud my judgment) *cries in ekun egbere*
She mentioned a couple of flavors that I honestly do not remember (like how do you not have vanilla???) At this point, I should have walked away, but I stayed and ordered something that was completely different from vanilla. She did give me a couple of flavors to try before making my final choice, but I guess I also thought it would be weird if I just walked away without actually buying ice cream (like ahan, this one just came to taste free ice cream).
Apparently, they make new ice cream flavors every day. So different days, different flavors kinda thing. It's available in cups or cones (cones are too messy for me). The price is determined by the number of servings: a three-step scoop costs N2,000 (naira), while a five-step scoop costs N3,000. Different toppings are available at an extra cost of N250 (pretty affordable if you ask me).
Oh, I just randomly remembered I got the guy's number; the plan was to call him ahead of time to check out what flavors were available, but I will not be calling.
A decision was finally made, and an ice cream flavor was settled for (yes, I settled for it). The ice cream swirling into the cup was oddly satisfying, no lies.
My ice cream was finally served (yay?) and I have never in my sixty-something years on this earth felt more heartbroken. The ice cream was so basic, almost felt like I was eating ice cubes with milk. It was too bland and it had a terrible aftertaste.
I feel like most people just go there for the photos so they can mark attendance too (they do have pretty pictures on their IG page). I promise you, I didn't go there to mark attendance, I'm a sucker for ice cream.
Lagos restaurants promoting aesthetics. I'm here to tell you guys that you're basically paying for aesthetics and not your meal.
Overall, on a scale of 1 to 10, I'd give this place a 3. They can do better, in my opinion. I think they can do better. Maybe channel some of the resources spent making the place aesthetically pleasing towards purchasing better ingredients to improve the ice cream's quality.
I definitely will not be going back there and I do not recommend. I hope I find better ice cream spots on the mainland, but for now, I'm just going to stick to Cakes & Cream's ice cream.
A word, they say is enough for the wise.
So here's the message that inspired this review, (shout out to my G for this one):
I should probably create an entirely different page for ice cream reviews, but for now, please enjoy this feature on the main page.
