This morning when I awakened, it was with thoughts of gratitude for a new day. The truth of the matter is that life is short, and the only time we have is now. For that matter, the only place that we have is here.
I went to bed last night with a heavy heart after learning of the tragic death by suicide of the son of a previous neighbor. He was still on the threshold of young adulthood.
Sadly and unexpectedly, his family and those closest to him now find themselves on the edge of a precipice of pain and grief that feels overwhelming.
I briefly looked at the news this morning and read that Jake Flint, a singer-songwriter active in Oklahoma's Red Dirt country scene, passed unexpectedly over the weekend. He was only 37 years old. He and his wife shared their wedding vows 36 hours earlier.
How does one wrap their head around any of that? That brings me back to where I started: "The only time we have is now, and the only place we have is here."
A question from the book of questions comes to mind: "If you were to die unexpectedly, what would you most regret not having told someone?" That question is followed by another: "Why haven't you told them?"
Most of us approach life without a sense of urgency. We live as though we have all the time in the world, but the truth of the matter is: "It goes by quickly."
When we moved into temporary housing over a year ago, we never thought it possible that temporary could extend as long as it has. I might add that we are in a very comfortable environment, but it is really not our environment. Everything we own is in storage. Perhaps because it is temporary, we don't live the way we previously lived.
We previously often chose to invite friends over for dinner and conversation. We've done that maybe four times since we moved. We seemingly put everything on hold while we waited to get our things out of storage and resume our lives.
As of today, I plan to select the "play" button and take life off of "pause".
What about you? How would the course of your day change if you sensed life was time limited like sand flowing through an hourglass?
My blog is entitled Carpe Diem - Seize the day! Did I mention there is often a contrast between theory and practice? It is sometimes true in my own life. What about yours?
If you have ever felt happier or more fully alive than you do now? Don't choose to settle for same ole-same ole. Life is a gift - don't waste it. Like the sands of an hourglass, so are the days of our life.
All My Best!
Don
