This is the first morning I've used my new MacBook Pro to post my blog. I am not one of those people that has to have the latest and the greatest from Apple to think I'm living in the age of technology.
I wouldn't have purchased a new computer, but the "i" key on my eight-year-old Macbook stopped working. I figured out that I could go to the internet and cut and paste an "i" in any word where an "i" was needed, but it was a time-consuming process and not doable long-term for efficiency's sake.
To spend around $800 to have an eight-year-old computer repaired seemed like throwing good money after bad. I opted to buy a new computer.
My first computer was an Apple that I purchased from Lee Arborn. Lee stayed on the cutting edge of Apple products and surrounded himself with the latest and greatest from Apple. I purchased the computer that he used to write his book "And They Also Flew".
The book chronicles the role of Sergeant Pilots in WWII. Of course, Lee was one of the first pilots trained in WWII. He lived the life, so it was logical that his interests would take him there. The book was published in 1992 by the Smithsonian Institution Press. It became required reading for individuals joining the United States Airforce.
Interestingly, Lee and his wife Peggy were the first couple to be married at what later was named Bergstrom Air Force Base. Trained as a pilot on a C-47 (Gooney Bird) Lee, was the first of five planes to land at Del Valle Airfield.
In his brief one week stay in Austin, Lee met and married Peggy. They were married for only one day when Lee's fifty ship unit departed Austin in October of 1942, for North Africa where he flew combat missions in the North African and Mediterranean theater. He returned a year later, having been decorated for participating in four major battles. His subsequent military career took Lee and Peggy to many places.
I met Lee and Peggy at the 40th birthday party of a dear friend. That was over 40 years ago. In short order, Lee and Peggy became good friends. The General and I shared a lot of time with them in subsequent years.
Sitting down at a new Mac reminded me of Lee. I miss Lee and Peggy. They were at the top of the leaderboard in everything that matters.
All My Best!
Don
