NATO was not caught unawares by Prigozhin's farcical attempted coup. Nor was Putin. As so often with the Russian leader, rumours of his doom have been greatly exaggerated...and the West is once more mired in lies.
I've had to shove another intended post out of the way today because it seems clear to me that things are coming to a head in the Ukraine-Russia "war"...with just as many ramifications beyond Russia than for Putin internally.
The UK's Daily Telegraph was firing off in all directions yesterday afternoon on a somewhat laboured series of articles insisting that Vladimir Putin is doomed because of the now "obvious" weakness he must feel in the light of an internal insurrection by Yevgeny Prigozhin, the founder and bombastic leader of Russia's private military group Wagner.
Prigoshin is a self-confessed mercenary who built a smart restaurant empire using unadulterated Gangster protection-racket tactics to achieve his ends. He also supported Putin's original bid for power after the collapse of the USSR....hence the term "mercenary".
The reality is that even the bastion of Build Back Better bullshit The New York Times had to admit that Yevgeny Prigozhin, the leader of the Wagner mercenary group, halted his forces' march on Moscow, and withdrew them from a southern Russia military hub. Russia dropped all treason charges against Mr. Prigozhin and said he would go to Belarus in a thinly disguised version of exile.
CNN, France24, Aljazeera, the BBC and the Washington Post all toed the same limp line. But the British Daily Telegraph persisted: James Kilner said Putin's authority "has been shattered", while other anonymous articles therein called the event "a catastrophic humiliation" for the Russian leader, and claimed that "Prigoshin's coup has ensured that Russia will never be the same again".
Wading in as an undiscerning fanatical supporter of the US/UK/NATO "Special Relationship", Dan Hannan went way over the top by asserting, 'Now, all of a sudden, the curtain has been snatched back, revealing the Wizard of Oz as a small, mediocre, frightened man'. It would not be hard to write everything Hannan really knows about Russo-Ukrainian history - and Putin's unmatched skill in asserting authority - on the backside of a British 2p coin.
So: what's really going on in this, yet another ill-timed and feeble attempt to predict Vlad the Lad's demise from cancer, insanity, megalomania, assassination and deadly internal rivals that represent little more than the wishful perspiring dreams of PentaCIA fantacists?
Well first up, you'd have to go a long way to find any Surveillance State authority that still denies the Telegraph's links with British and NATO security institutions. Con Coughlin, the Telegraph's veteran Defence 'expert', is a known player with both NATO and MI6. Since the launch of the Russian occupation of Ukraine in February 2022, Coughlin has managed to be wrong all the time about Putin's position as Russian leader, his favourite fantasy being (ironically) that Putin has fantasies. He returned to this theme ten days ago in a piece whose subhead told us that the Russian leader "has only empty gestures left"....and named Yevgeny Prigozhin specifically as a major threat...after hurling nonstop accusations and allegations at Putin. The latter's dispatch of the Wagner leader into effective exile turned out to be swift and anything but empty. Con was reduced using Nikita Kruschev's granddaughter as the carrier of his own line: '....Vladimir Putin's position is becoming "weaker and weaker", despite being seen as a "victor" against Yevgeny Prigozhin.' How weaker, we ask.
Con's identification of Yevgeny Prigozhin ten days before most people had even heard of him smacked to me of the old boy being given advance warning about what was about to happen. This was confirmed when two further articles by other Torygraph hacks immediately popped up, reporting that "sources" had revealed that NATO, the Pentagon and the CIA "were caught unawares by the coup attempt". This is standard Deep State procedure after failure necessitates an announcement of clean hands and an absence of any blood thereupon - but it doesn't stand up.
The Washington Post (no stranger itself to CIA implants) runs a story this morning confirming that, 'The U.S. had intelligence that Prigozhin had been building up his forces near the [Belarus] border with Russia for some time.' And The Associated Press told WAPO how 'a source who must remain anonymous says Congressional leaders were briefed on the Wagner buildup earlier last week'.
Oops. Time to get your lies in a row, chaps. As Washington's favourite Weasel Vlodomire Zelenskyy is an Ally of the US, one wonders in turn when he knew…and what contact he's had with the Wagner leader. But much of that comes down to what Prigozhin's motive was.
It's been obvious for some time that Langley Virginia-sur-Pentagon wants régime change in Moscow....preferably a breakdown in authority allowing them to walk into Russia and fill the vacuum. This is not only naivety at the Bay of Pigs level of unreality, it's also incalculably dangerous to have enormous nuclear delivery power in uncertain hands. But that's never held the Unelected US State back before.
The CIA has been openly trying to recruit Russian spies since the start of the war, even taking online ads on the social media like Telegram. But British army sources this morning were expressing alarm that the move of Wagner into Belarus leaves Kyiv in a highly vulnerable position.
Given Yevgeny Prigozhin's alleged motive for launching his March on Moscow was dissatisfaction with the performance of Putin's generals, it may well be that an attack on Kyiv by Wagner was part of the deal he struck with Russia's leader....being "given his head" so to speak. But a success for Prigozhin in that theatre of the war would make him an even bigger threat to Putin. Personally, I don't buy all of that.
He is, without doubt, the ultra-conservatives' conservative - calling himself a Sovyet citizen and openly admiring "Comrade Stalin". He is dictatorial in every sense, foul-mouthed, a former jailbird after the style of Fagin and inclined to make rash decisions. I suspect that Putin is giving him a hospital pass....and one which, at the same time, could leave the West wondering if it should be more careful about what it wishes for.
Above all, it gives Zelenskyy something new to worry about. The Americans clearly knew what Yevgeny Prigozhin was up to before he made his move.....but they did nothing to stop him. The last thing the World needs now is a genuinely resurgent Sovyet Union that means business and takes back The Ukraine in a no-holds-barred brutal manner. It's also the last thing the Biden administration needs.
Stay tuned.
