Losing one's credit card could be a costly inconvenience. It works best when I carry my credit card tucked away in my money clip. The money clip is also where I keep my driver's license. So, what are the odds that in space of a week I could lose both my credit card and my driver's license and still have my money clip?
I noticed that my driver's license was missing three or four days before the credit card disappeared. Fortunately, the person asking to see my license was not the driver of a black and white car with red lights flashing during a traffic stop. Been there/done that.
About two years ago a DPS vehicle followed me for several miles. We were on our way to Surfside Beach in Texas. When I turned to head toward Lake Jackson, the vehicle turned behind me and a quarter of a mile later, I saw flashing red lights in my rearview mirrors.
The officer stopped me because the State inspection sticker for my truck had expired. Who would have thought? After asking to see my driver's license, the next question was what number tint I had on the windows in my truck. Excuse me? I had no idea what he was talking about. The truck was exactly as I had bought it new. I'm sure there was an additional charge for the tinting done by the dealership, but there was no indication in my memory associated to what number tint was added.
He went back to the vehicle with flashing red lights and brought back a device to put on a partially rolled down window in my truck to determine if the tinting was too dark. Fortunately, it was not. The brief interruption resulted in a warning ticket. I was relieved.
At any rate, the only person that had asked for my driver's license was the person at the cell-phone store wanting to substantiate my identity. Since I was back in the next door, I asked if I had left my license. Reportedly, I had not, but I haven't yet found it.
I wasn't overly concerned because I just received a new license with my current address. I took it out of the envelope and placed it in my money clip thinking it was better than the old one. I had carried it twenty-one months with my old address. Okay, so that's too much information.
The credit card was a mystery to me. I had used it at Home Depot in Bulverde and intended to use it at Walmart. I was with a family member pushing a basket and it was my intent to pay for the contents. The person pushing the basket refused to allow me to do so, so I slide the card inside my pocket. I did not put it back in the money clip.
The alarm bells should have gone off in my head. That was not smart. At any rate, by late afternoon I noticed I no longer had my credit card. I got online and found the purchase at Home Depot. There was another purchase after that one. As it turned out, the General and I use the same credit card number, she had made a purchase online. There was no indication that anyone else had used the card. I breathed a sigh of relief.
In an attempt to be proactively responsible, I called and reported the credit card lost. That card was cancelled and a new card with a new number will arrive via UPS on Monday.
Yesterday afternoon, I took more things upstairs to put in attic storage. On the second trip, I noticed the credit card on the floor by some boxes.
Lost and found would have been more joyful if I had not cancelled the credit card. No I have to remember to notify the toll-tag office and update them with my new credit card number.
All My Best!
Don
