Writing became a little "congested" when I tied my windows computer, my Mac, and my iPad together (Scrivener-wise) through Dropbox. It's important to me to be able to do my rough drafts on the iPad. I'm very word productive on that device.
But I need a much better version of Scrivener to look at the outline and move around in the document with the Windows or Mac versions of the program. My iMac, however, is very outdated. I purchased it refurbished last year and I do like it a lot, but mostly use it just for face to face time with family and close friends. It's an iMac, big desktop all-in-one, with outdated Catalina OS. But it works great.
I can use the iMac version of Scrivener to do all the things I can do with the Windows version. But I do not have Microsoft Word for Mac installed, nor do I want to invest in it. So, when it comes time to do some uploading to my Kindle for a final read-through, I want the Windows computer.
There's a reason for each of the three tied together tools. This could all be solved, if I had the money to invest in more expensive equipment, but I don't , and I'm not sure I'd change anyway. One doesn't have to be "rich" to pursue a writing career. Many still use Word to write their entire documents, and in fact, publishers prefer this to communicate back and forth with their authors using the tools to track changes.
However, for me as an indie author, I prefer the flexibility of Scrivener. I like being able to move to a specific scene with just a click. I can move scenes and chapters without any effort at all. And I really like the ability to see the book as index cards all together on a corkboard. It reminds me of the days when I used storyboards for plotting and outlining.
Writing can be as difficult or as simple as we wish. It's all a matter of choice. Just write!
