Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny - Review
Indiana Jones and Basil Shaw battle the Nazis to recover the Lance of Longinus on a Nazi plunder train. However, Jones and the Nazi astrophysicist Jürgen Voller discover the artifact is fake. Among the train relics, Voller found Antikythera, a mechanism to locate fissures in time. Jones and Shaw battle Voller on the train and steal the Antikythera from Voller. Then, they jump in the water to avoid a train derailment. Shaw is happy to have the device, but Jones knows they only have half of it.
Indiana Jones teaches his last class and retires. He goes to the local pub to celebrate, and a student sits beside him. He doesn't recognize her immediately until she tells Jones her name: Helena Shaw. She is Basil's daughter and Jones's goddaughter. She wants to know more about the relic and its current location. Helena read her father's journals. She believes Basil knew where to find the other half. Jones takes Helena to the school's archives and removes the machine from a hidden drawer. Helena beams. She knew Jones would never destroy it, as Basil requested. Indiana doesn't know why Helena wants it. When CIA operatives distract Jones, Helena grabs the Dial and runs away.
The operatives work for Voller, who now hides as a NASA scientist on the recently-successful Apollo 11 project. They murder Jones's former co-worker but can't find Helena. Jones returns to his old office to find the co-worker dead on the floor. The operatives report Jones as the killer and tell Voller that Helena has the Dial. Voller tells them to forget the White House celebration and locate Helena and Jones. Jones tries to call for help after discovering his co-worker's body, but an operative stops and grabs Jones. Jones manipulates the Apollo parade to escape and runs to Sallah for assistance. Sallah uncovered that Helena isn't a student. She is a grifter who sells historical artifacts on the black market. Jones must find Helena and the Dial before Voller finds them.
This review will feel disjointed because the action is missing to remove spoilers. And there are plenty of death-defying escapes, near misses, and falling debris to satisfy new and long-time Indiana Jones fans (FTC Affiliate Disclaimer). The movie nods to the original but doesn't alienate new viewers. A glance at Wikipedia will put you in the know. Helena is brilliant, but she isn't an archeologist. She is a woman driven by money with a young pickpocket, Teddy, at her side. Helena gets out of situations with her wit as her father and godfather did. While she displays a careless exterior, Jones sees her passion for history and Basil's legacy. Jones is a hero without a purpose. He needs this mission to remember the man he wants to be. This new installment has a temporal plot. But it's not the film's focus. The storyline is about the hunt, not time travel. This movie does not disappoint established fans and opens the imagination of new ones. Audiences should see this movie on the big screen and fall in love for the first time or all over again.
I give it 4.5 out of 5 stars

Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken - Review
Ruby Gillman lives with her parents, Agatha and Arthur, and her little brother, Sam. Agatha is a real estate agent, and Arthur runs a diner. Sam is a dodgeball legend. Ruby feels underwhelming next to them, but they assure her she is stellar and intelligent. Ruby's parents only have one rule: Stay away from the ocean. The ocean is a dangerous place. So Ruby hides in plain sight and acts human at her high school. If anyone asks about her blue skin, Ruby says she's from Canada. This year junior prom will be on a boat with beautiful weather. Ruby creates a presentation to sway Agatha, but Agatha is immovable.
Ruby meets her friends, Trevin, Bliss, and Margot, at school and wants to form a solitary pact to throw an anti-prom. But they admit to having dates. They beg Ruby to reconsider attending prom, and she decides to lie to her mom and go. But now, Ruby needs a date. Ruby wants to pick her crush, Connor, and use her graphic calculator for a prom proposal (FTC Affiliate Disclaimer). Ruby is tutoring Connor in math, so she, a mathlete, loves the idea. Margot tells Ruby not to give homework for prom and hands Ruby a confetti gun. Ruby finds Conor but can't work up the nerve to ask him. Connor sees the confetti gun, it accidently goes off, and the glitter pushes him into the ocean. Ruby looks at the water for Connor, but he doesn't emerge. She takes a deep breath and jumps in to save him. Soon, Ruby is glowing and growing underwater. She unknowingly lets out a signal and fearfully wakes up on land. Ruby prepares to explain what's happening, but a new girl, Chelsea, claims to have rescued Connor. Chelsea is an instant sensation with Ruby's classmates, but Ruby flees because she can't stop glowing.
Ruby runs through town trying to hide, but Agatha spots her. Agatha gets in her car to drive to Ruby and hits something in the road. She stops to help and discovers it's her brother, Brill. Their mother heard about Ruby's transformation in the ocean and now wants to meet her granddaughter. Agatha says no and drives to Ruby. Ruby is enormous and doesn't know how to shrink. Agatha helps Ruby relax and transform. They go home, and Agatha tells Ruby the truth. Ruby is a Kraken. Agatha and Arthur brought their family to shore years ago to keep them safe. Ruby runs to her room but overhears Agatha and Brill talking about Ruby's grandmother and other secrets. Ruby chooses to find her grandmother and learn everything. Ruby will uncover a war, her powers, and her strength, but she must release the Kraken.
This film is a magical look at teenage life. Ruby must find her identity in high school with a changing body. As her grandmother says, she isn't a human trying not to change. Ruby is a Kraken pretending to be human. Ruby still wants a friend to understand her as she navigates uncharted waters. She instantly connects to Chelsea, a mermaid in disguise. This movie uses social media and texting bubbles to enhance the storyline. So bring glasses if you need them. This film connects with adults and teens on humor and compassion level. The plot finds joy in the awkward moment and humanity in the sad. This movie is about three generations of women trying to be individuals but realizing they have a commonality: love. Enjoy this movie in the theaters to marvel at its wonder.
