Last night the General and I were privileged to attend a promotion celebration for a friend. I have long referred to him (tongue-in-cheek) as Robert the RhinoLiner guy. Robert drives a Honda Pick-up Truck. I'm not sure when he had the exterior coated with the Rhino-Liner application that many choose to have applied as a bed-liner in their truck to avoid scratching, but the message is not subtle. It is clear that: "Tough Just Got Tougher."
Like the "Don't Mess With Texas" warning, when the newly promoted Col. Robert Hites pulls into the parking lot, you intuitively know that he is a no-nonsense kind of guy.
His friendship is one that I value greatly. In real life, kindness is his virtue, and he doesn't purposefully overlook an opportunity to help someone else. He is both an officer and a gentleman.
His Christian faith serves as a springboard for every dimension of his life. In addition, his love for family and sense of patriotism are also mainstays in his life.
Trust me, Col Hites is more than a weekend warrior, and he has seen more than his share of boots-on-the-ground deployments. His most recent tour of duty was in Afghanistan, and it was not just a quick-trip tour. He was deployed for months.
For his promotion celebration, Col. Hites is not the kind of guy that wants to be surrounded by 200 of his closest friends. Last night's event included a hand-picked close-knit group of family and friends.
The small group included Lydia, his wife, along with his mother, sister, and his wife's sister and her family. In addition, he invited friends from the Army National Guard and friends from his church.
People like Col. Hites give rise to the thought that patriotism, Christian duty, and honor are still the mainstays of the land of the free.
