HEADS UP: I (Sara) feel that I talk even the tiniest bit more in-depth about the contents of the episode than Lesley, especially when it comes to the ending of the episode. If you haven't seen the episode yet, please proceed through this review with caution, as it may contain more spoilers than a typical review on this blog.
The episode begins with Emi waking up in her bed, but something is different...she's not in the clothes she got in Ente Isla, instead being in her regular clothes. She realizes that she's going to be late to work, but then we hear Rika's voice and see Emi...at work. She makes plans with Rika to go to a ramen place for lunch, when Emi gets a phone call. She picks up that phone call, and it's from Chiho. During the conversation, we shift from Emi's workplace back to her apartment, where she remains on the phone with Chiho, who is looking forward to a dinner that's planned for the next day. We then head to Suzuno's apartment, where she is also looking forward to this dinner and asks Emi to buy some groceries. We then shift to the grocery store, where both Ashiya and Urushihara are buying groceries, with Emi spotting the eggs, which Ashiya planned on using to make some quiche. During the conversation, Alas Ramus said that she wanted to see Maou, and so the group end up outside the apartment that Maou, Ashiya, and the freeloader Urushihara share. She tries opening the door, but it's locked, so she tries knocking instead. When that doesn't work, she looks for assistance from Ashiya, Urushihara, and Alas Ramus, but all three are gone. But the door ends up opening and Emi walks in. But instead of being the apartment that is in Villa Rosa Sasazuka, it is instead Devil's Castle from when Maou tried to take over Ente Isla. Emi manages to look pas this, and treats the Devil King Satan as if he were still the Maou she knew. Of course, this leads to her getting attacked...and her waking up back in Ente Isla, realizing that all the previous events were just a dream.
The next scene with Amane, Urushihara, Rika, and Suzuno standing outside of the Gates of Hell after Maou and Suzuno went through them through a Gate. Rika asks what they're supposed to do, and Chiho provides the honest answer of wait and have hope in Maou and Suzuno. Over in Ente Isla, Maou and Suzuno have set up camp, and both Suzuno and Acieth are wearing sleeping bags that can be zipped in a way to let your arms and legs out. Suzuno is wearing it to get used to moving in it, while Acieth just seems to be wearing it to match Suzuno. However, when her moving around knocks down the tent, Maou asks Suzuno to change while he and Acieth set the tent back up. During this, we learn that Acieth doesn't remember anything from before she got her human body. But it has Maou confused...if Acieth got a human form first, why is she the younger sister? Of course, Maou ends up getting scared by Suzuno, who has changed into Church vestments. Through this, we also learn the reason WHY Suzuno wears kimonos in Japan: they were the most similar to her Church vestments, and Maou commenting that Suzuno should consider getting some Western clothes.
We then get a montage of the group traveling, before the scooters have to be stopped because Eastern forces are nearby, thus meaning that it is necessary to get around them. Meanwhile, Emi and Olba are walking, with Emi wearing the suit of armor she wore as a hero. During this walk, we find out that Emi is needed to take back Heavensky, and that this would be her second operation. She ends up agreeing and goes past citizens excited to see that she's alive, with Olba preparing Emi for what is to come. Back with Maou and Suzuno, they end up needing to abandon the scooters so that if they get discovered, they look more normal. Maou was geetting used to the scooter, even going as far to call it "Powered Dullahan III". We also find out why Maou calls his commute vehicles "Dullahan": a way of trying to create good luck to prevent him from getting axed from his job. Suzuno is surprised that the reason is so human, and then asks why Maou decided to try and take over Ente Isla. When he doesn't reveal it, Suzuno decides to frame it like a Church confession, and that causes him to open up. Bottom line: demon realm was terrible place, Maou's attempt to unify it actually got rid of food since demons feed on fear and despair, Maou invaded Ente Isla with the commands of kill any opposers, but accept all surrender as an attempt to rule humans under a reasonable amount of fear.
Of course, there's something that puts demons and humans apart: humans need food. But demons do not. Maou learned that in only 3 days in Japan, hence making the structure of the societies different. Suzuno wraps it up like a confession, and even forgives Maou. Back with Emi, a meeting is being held with her at the lead of it and a soldier runs in to report the finding of an enemy leader. Emi is about to say that she'll deal with it, but Olba advises that since she's the commander in chief of the army, she shouldn't. She tries to use her commander in chief position to invite the Malebranche to surrender before anymore blood is shed. When that gets objected by Olba, Emi points out that it's their job to save places, not create massacres. Of course, the enemy leader ends up getting defeated.
Meanwhile with Ashiya and Gabriel, Gabriel lets Ashiya know what he's supposed to do: sit on the throne and wait for Emi. During some conversation, we find out that Gabriel wants to save Heaven, and that Gabriel wants Ashiya to keep fighting as long as possible when Emi arrived. Back with Emi, she's torn: in this mission, defeating the demons is supposed to be good...but she feels bad. Alas Ramus heads to her mother to try and help comfort her. Back with Maou, Suzuno, and Acieth, Maou sneaks into the girls' tent to wake up Suzuno and keep her quiet, since someone has arrived at their current campsite. Of course, this someone turns out to be a person that could be an ally...Albert Ende. Of course, Albert ends up mistaking Suzuno for a demon due to her current outfit. We then see Barbariccia and Farfarello having a conversation, which Ashiya walks in on and asks for an explanation.
We cut BACK to Maou, Suzuno, a sleeping Acieth, and Albert having a conversation, with Albert being there to see if a rumor was true...and it was. Albert is unable to contact Emerada, as she needs to appear before the Inquisition, and the position Eme currently has is the only thing guaranteeing Emi and Albert's safety. Maou then suggests to Albert that they should join forces. Back with Ashiya, we find out that Olba and the archangels from Heaven had tricked the Malebranche, with them failing to get Devil's Castle back, and sacrificed lives in vain. When asked why they didn't follow Maou's orders, and that's when we find out that Yesod fragments also react to demonic energy. Ashiya manages to piece together what Gabriel has planned, and decides to play along for now. But Gabriel has overheard that and says something interesting...he's waited two thousand years for a new Great Devil to be born. We jump for the final time in this episode to Maou and the gang, with Maou trying to convince Albert to join them. Albert agrees, and then inquires about Acieth, asking if she was the one that fused with Emi. Maou tells him no, and tries to turn Acieth into her sword form, but it just turns out pathetic. Also, Maou vomits, like the episode title said he would. But of course, something is odd...if Maou is in Ente Isla, why is he still a human?
When compared to the ninth volume of the light novel, this takes us through the end of it. While the story is good, I feel like events were coming a bit too fast. It wasn't so fast that it was an automatic turnoff, but it felt like I didn't have as much time to breathe and calm down after the revelations of a previous cut. At least with the light novel, I felt like I had that. But other than me griping about pacing for the second week in a row (even if my complaint isn't as bad as last week's), I'm excited for next week's episode, since it'll be covering content I haven't read in the light novels yet (I've only read the first nine volumes).
