Did you know that a new citizenship bill has been proposed in Germany this year (2023)? The goal is to simplify the process for skilled workers to enter the country and to make it easier to acquire citizenship if they wish. According to the yet-to-be-passed bill, there will be a more streamlined and efficient way for immigrants to apply for both citizenship and residency.
The proposal has multiple benefits. It will make it easier for young people who come to Germany to work or study, as well as those who will come in future years, to apply for residency after living in Germany for just three years. Previously, you could only apply for residency after living in Germany for five years.
Germany is also planning to allow dual citizenship. This means that individuals can retain the citizenship of their home country while also acquiring German citizenship. This applies to people who have lived in Germany for 10 years or those who have a close relative, such as a married spouse or a child, living in Germany.
Initially, the term "skilled workers" was thought to apply only to academia. However, this has changed. It now applies to anyone with vocational qualifications and professional experience. You can come to Germany even if your expertise or qualifications haven't been formally recognized, provided you have a work contract in Germany and at least two years of experience in your field.
Moreover, if you don't yet have a job offer, you can still apply for a visa to come to Germany and look for employment. In this case, you'll be granted a six-month visa for your job search. Several factors, such as age, education, language proficiency, and professional experience, will play a role in this process.
