Mompowerment Thoughts

Hi read,

How are you today? Ready to make some changes in your life? Yes? Me too!

Fall is often a season for change. Is it the changing leaves or kids back in school? Whatever it is, I appreciate this time of year.

I recently spoke at a big conference and attended a few other speakers' sessions. I'm doing a round-up of my observations and a-ha moments from the conference that might help you as you're making changes in your life.

Be specific. Don't be vague and expect others at work or home to get it. Ask for what you need to create the life you want. And being specific with what you want and need helps you stay in control. I actually talk a lot about asking for what you need, but I appreciated the added insight of being specific.

Know the scripts your brain has written. We all have these. These mental shortcuts or heuristics help us quickly get things done. The challenge is that if your shortcut is hindering you, it's already programmed in how you do things. Understand that internal dialogue as you aim to make change.

It's not enough to try to change behavior. Change beliefs to change your actions/behavior. OK, you recognize that the shortcut in your brain isn't helping, so you simply change what you're telling yourself. Nope, it's not that easy. Know why you wrote that script. Address that mindset as part of changing your behavior.

Develop new habits. You see a habit you don't like, so you work on changing it, right? Easy enough. Maybe not. It starts with writing a new script, but you still need to take action. Develop new habits to replace the old ones you want to leave behind.

Create win-wins. OK, if you've read either of the Mompowerment books, you know this one already. I thought the new elements of this idea were worth mentioning here, though. To create win-win scenarios, you must know your value/strengths and others' motivations. See how to pair these elements as you create win-wins.

What helps you create change in your life? Where do you get stuck as you try to create change in your life?

Sending you the courage to embrace change in your life,
Suzanne

PS Want to make some specific changes in your life? We're kicking off our first accountability session in the Facebook group on 11/3 at 12pm CST. Join us and feel free to pass it on to someone you know who's trying to make changes in her life!

PPS Please share your thoughts on how your employer is doing when it comes to supporting your work-life balance. As part of my research for book #3, I've created a survey. I'm specifically looking for working moms and dads who are employees, especially in the US, to share their thoughts on how their employer is doing.
