That's what most people say when I tell them my daughter will be flying back home this weekend after 3 months in sunny California. While I do know what they mean (time always passes quickly when you have things going on), my knee-jerk reaction is still - oh, really?! 3 months may seem short from the outside, but some of us felt all the 90 days (and nights), thank you very much. How people did this before there were iPhones and the Internet? No. Idea.
All in all, I'm intensely happy we were able to pull the adventure off. It took a village, and everyone showed up for our kid: Her school here in Berlin, the school in the US, the family there, and us of course. It's amazing to have kind people in your life whom you can entrust with caring for your kids. We're extremely lucky that way, and it's not even the being blood related - I know tons of people who hate their relatives. Fortunately, we have no reason to :-).
Since there is _still_ no direct flight out to LAX from Berlin (never mind we're the capital of Germany...), we'll go get her from Frankfurt airport, driving out after work on Friday, bringing a coat and scarf in the hopes to avoid a cold (fat chance after a crowded flight in November, I know, but we'll try!)
It's a welcome opportunity to see our people in Frankfurt, if only briefly, for I'm assuming we'll head right back after collecting our precious cargo. The allure of E's own bed after a transatlantic flight will be considerable, also there's a certain young tomcat who was sorely missed.
So, a bit of mileage in my near future, with the best possible reason I can think of.
Crafts: I have been doing some here and there. Started working on a new sweater for my son
He chose a very soft, dark grey merino yarn (a b... to knit unless you have daylight, or a decent neck lamp). My son browsed my knitting pattern books, decided on a textured pattern he liked, then went on to design his own version, and that's what I'm working on now.
R2: edge stitch, purl all stitches, edge stitch. Turn.
R3: edge stitch, knit all stitches, edge stitch. Turn.
R4: repeat R2.
Repeat R1-4.
The pattern looks good on the wrong side, too, so I'm thinking about trying to make it a reversible piece. We'll see.
On a smaller scale, I've finished these stripy colorwork socks, and think they turned out great!
and, on a smaller scale still, since 'tis the school fayre season yet again, I've been making teeny-tiny crochet hats for these fellows.
They always sell like hot cakes, we never have enough in stock, and we're on a mission to build up some supply. I love their delicate little shapes, they're always pure joy to play with when we decorate for the holidays.
Speaking of which – OMG, can you believe that will literally be next month? I feel this year went by like it happened to someone else. I will try and select a picture for every month at the end of the year.
Now, I need to get back to my current cookbook project, a charming book by British-Cypriot author Georgina Hayden, who writes about cooking, food, and her family. Great recipes, and an all in all charming, bubbly, and very enticing read. A book to look forward to, when it comes out next spring!
Have a great day on this random Thursday, and try to catch some pretty foliage while it's there.
Thank you for reading, and asking about E's well-being. You know who you are!
