I was published again last week! This time by Kosmeo online magazine. You can view their full Advent issue here or you can go directly to my article here. I tell the story of a time I was given a lot more communion wine than expected. Enjoy!
You may have noticed that I have been posting much less consistently the second part of this year. Mid year, I realized that I needed to reevaluate my writing goals. The goal of publishing regularly to my blog was to increase the amount of writing I was doing. However, I realized the blog goal actually conflicted with my publishing goals. It sometimes limited what I could have published to a broader audience. A big name magazine was interested in an article of mine, but ultimately didn't take it because I had already published it to my own blog so it existed on the internet already. This was really disappointing.
So, I switched tactics and kept up the habit of writing weekly, but when an article, story, or poem I was working on had bigger potential or would appeal to a broader audience, I would hold it back. Instead of posting to my blog, I'd get feedback, revise and edit, and submit it to publications first. Of course, this made the process for each piece much longer. Just the step of hearing back after submitting can take a few weeks to a few months.
Moving forward, I'll continue to write for the my blog, but it might be less frequent or more likely to be something more personal. Of course, if I am published elsewhere, I will send you all an update and a link like I did today!
In the meantime, I'm actually doing a lot more writing! I've gotten into the habit of Friday mornings being my writing time. I'll either write at my house, or if I'm getting distracted by housework, I'll go to the library or a coffee shop and stay an hour or so. Because my laptop has been dying a slow death, I've had some productive times with a paper notebook and pen, either writing a first draft or editing something small (like a poem or picture book manuscript). I'm thankful my full time work schedule allows for this refreshing time in the morning when I'm feeling creative.
Did you adjust any of your goals mid year?
