Yesterday morning's tumble from the sidewalk at my daughter's home came as a complete surprise. I used the side door, and my orthopedic boot was no match for the wet sidewalk. It was almost as if my fall was in slow motion. Truth be told, I found it a terrifying experience. I did not need for this to happen!
When I saw my doctor this past Monday, he cautioned me that my foot is far from healed and that any injury could have complicated side effects. His words echoed inside my head as I was falling.
Consequently, I attempted to take the brunt of the fall on my upper body. Before it was over I was lying flat on my back. Initially I felt pain in both of my hands and wrists, but there was no undue pain from the injured foot.
While lying on the ground, the thoughts running through my head were strange. I felt like a little kid who had been caught with his hand inside the cookie jar. The side door of the house has a glass window. Did the General see me fall? Somehow in my thought processes, I thought if she didn't see the fall that maybe it would be better.
Of course, I had to turn over onto my stomach to negotiate getting up from the ground. The wet grass was an unwelcomed sensation. Once I was up on my feet and standing, I noticed the first Velcro strap across the foot portion of my boot appeared broken. I attempted to reinsert the plastic connection in the sole of my boot and that didn't work. I needed a new boot.
I told the General we needed to order another boot from Amazon. Through Amazon, the cost of the boot is $48. Through the pharmacy in Dripping Springs, it is $119. My thought processes were sound! The General saw it differently, Amazon would take over a day to get here. In the interim, I needed the support of the orthopedic boot. She suggested I call the pharmacy. As luck would have it, they did not have another boot hat size in stock. They offered to order me one on Monday. I figured Amazon could beat that.
The DNA from my dad kicked into play. Would duct tape work? I'm joking. However, I did take the boot off to see if there was any way to reattach the part of the boot that was no longer attached.
With the boot in hand at eye level, I could see far more clearly. Fortunately, I was able to reinsert the piece where it was supposed to be, and it felt secure. I put the boot back on and have not taken it off since. I know what you're thinking, but I'm telling the truth. I sleep with the boot on.
There is no pain in my foot, consequently I figuratively escaped a bad experience. From now on, I will go out the front door. I will also walk with a cane. I went out the side door yesterday morning to avoid a chance for the two labs to get out. Our daughter and son-in-law will be home on Monday. We will then be relieved from dog duty.
Our keeping the dogs is no trouble. They are well behaved and always eager to see us.
All My Best!
Don
