Single Black Female 2: Simone's Revenge - Review
After watching her home burn down with Simone inside two years ago, Monica moves to Seattle with her best friend, Bebe, for a new job at Red Alert News. Bebe will be a hairdresser on set, so Monica smooths out their work etiquette between friends. Bebe promises to be on her best behavior. She will think before she acts and act slowly before doing. Also, Bebe has a list of things she wants to accomplish in this new city.
Monica and Bebe meet their new boss, Kendyl, and are immediately off-put by Kendyl's cold demeanor. Monica doesn't like Kendyl, but Bebe appreciates Kendyl's honesty. Later, Bebe works on Monica's hair when the makeup artist, Layla, enters the dressing room. Bebe asks for more time, but Layla says no. Bebe takes a breath and leaves. Monica tries to make small talk with Layla, but Layla isn't interested.
Monica sits at the anchor desk, and Kendyl takes her notecards away. She tells Monica to read the prompter and abruptly informs Monica that she will have a guest, Trevor. Monica gracefully handles the change until Monica reads her life story to the audience. Monica freezes because she hasn't dealt with the trauma of Simone's attack. Monica regroups on air, interviews her guest, and finishes the segment. Monica confronts Kendyl about the ambush, but Kendyl declines to apologize or change. Monica can't escape her nightmares and feels Simone around her even though Simone is dead.
In Texas, Sister Grace wishes she could remember her past but is grateful Sister Margaret saved her after she collapsed on the side of the road years ago. Grace works in a thrift store when she sees Monica talking about her stalker on the news. The report causes Grace's memories to flood back. She remembers her name is Simone and rages about Monica's report, slandering her name. Simone tells Margaret that her memories returned, and she wants to face them. Margaret encourages Simone to find the truth. She doesn't know that truth is deadly. Simone is out for revenge and won't stop until she gets it.
This sequel to Single Black Female ramps up the crazy quickly. Simone gets her memory back in the first 30 minutes and goes on a revenge rampage. Everything she does is slow and deliberate. She learns new technical techniques to enter Monica's life and destroy it from the inside out. Since everyone thinks Simone's dead, Simone has to get close to Monica without being seen. Also, Monica isn't dealing with her psychological trauma from the attack. She has nightmares and sees Simone, but her fear is understandable. As a warning, it does take a while for the body count to start. But it quickly rises. And the ending will leave you ready for part 3. Also, the makeup and clothing were incredible.
I give it 4.5 out of 5 stars

Lonely Crime Fanantic - Review
Ashley has another nightmare about her estranged husband, Paul, after listening to a crime podcast before going to bed. Her friend, Lily, warns Ashley that Ashley focuses on podcasts to avoid her divorce. Lily thinks Ashley should spend more time calling attorneys and less time with earbuds. When Ashley states she's heard them all, Lily mentions the Unsolved Files podcast starring David Bryant. Ashley hasn't heard of this podcast, but Lily tells her to focus on her divorce. Then, Paul uses his key to get inside the house. Ashley tells him to leave, but he refuses because she won't talk to him. She pushes him out and declares she will only communicate with him through a lawyer.
Ashley researches David online and learns he has a book signing. She asks Lily to accompany her and buys David's book. Ashley decides to drive to the signing when Lily has to work late. But Paul had her car towed because it was in his name. Ashley catches a ride share and arrives very late. She finds David talking to fans outside the store, and David politely corrects Ashley for fawning about his work. He wants her to remember that the podcast's subjects are real people. Then, he signs her book with his phone number and invites her to dinner. During dinner, David offers to show Ashley his studio and get her started in podcasting. Ashley believes this is the start of something beautiful. It will be a beautiful disaster.
This movie drags to an abrupt stop that you will beg for. No matter how much Lily tries to warn Ashley, Ashley keeps falling for distractions. She focuses on podcasts instead of her divorce. Then, Ashley falls in love with David before knowing him. She listens to podcasts without heeding their warnings. And Ashley's final revelation feels like a critique on true crime podcasts, their listeners, and their subjects. It's a bit preachy for the wild setup. This film is a bore and, hopefully, the worst entry for the Wicked Revenge 2024 season.
I give it 1.5 out of 5 stars

The Soulmate Search - Review
Ellen hangs her latest commissioned installation in the Birchwood building as her cousin, Chloe, and agent, Angel, admires Ellen's work. Ellen tells them that an highly exclusive dating service, Eternity, delivered their famed black envelope. Eternity has a 100% success rate, but they have several rules. You must accept any date they send to you. They will cancel your membership if you don't go or hesitate. Second, you have to stay on the date for 30 minutes. If you cut it short, they will end your contract. Third, Ellen can't ask who recommended her for Eternity, or she's out. And fourth, she has to recommend another candidate for Eternity once she makes her match. Ellen can never rejoin if Eternity pulls her from the program. Ellen is excited because she wants true love like her parents had.
As Ellen hangs her painting, Will enters and criticizes her artwork. She brushes him off as an uptight snob and doesn't respect his opinion. However, his family runs the building and the law firm on the top 2 floors. Attorney Will knows his opinion is the one that matters. Ellen ignores him as Will leaves.
Ellen gets a call from Eternity and accepts the dinner date. She goes to the restaurant, follows the host to her table, and sits. Ellen looks up and sees Will sitting across from her. She thinks it's a mistake until the waiter brings two complimentary glasses of champagne from Eternity. Will stands to exit, but Ellen stops him. Ellen doesn't want to lose her membership. She reminds Will that they must stay for 30 minutes, so he sets a timer on his phone. They snip at each other for 30 minutes and retreat.
Ellen sadly reports to Chloe and Angel that she is Eternity's first failure. She wants to meet with them and have them explain why they thought Will would be a good match. Ellen's calls go unanswered, so she walks to the Eternity headquarters and finds Will standing outside. He wants answers, too. They knock on the door, and a man walks out. He informs them that the building has been empty for months, and they are staging it for potential buyers. Will and Ellen realize Eternity conned them. Ellen tells her friends and wants to find the truth. However, Will desires to sue. So they begrudgingly decide to work together to bring Eternity down. Will they beat Eternity, or will Eternity win?
This movie needs your attention to see how everything comes together. As Ellen and Will investigate Eternity, they go on accidental micro dates. They dance, have a stroll, and eat. Ellen is a romantic, but Will thinks true love is a joke. You don't understand why until the last 30 minutes. Will carries a lot of hurt and resentment. Viewers will learn who nominated Ellen. However, Ellen did not officially choose the next candidate. So, the audience may get a part two.
I give it 3 out of 5 stars
