They say that practice makes perfect. Unfortunately, my culinary skills on my cast aluminum grill have fallen by the wayside. Before we sold our home in Henly, I often cooked outside during warmer weather.
The twenty-one months we lived in temporary housing, I didn't use the grill at all. We were living in a "garden home" community, and there was another house ten feet away. Of course, I realize that the likelihood of my catching the neighbor's house on fire was minimal, but why take that chance?
We've been in our current home over ten months. Can that really be possible? Where has the time gone? The past three and a half months have been anything but typical for me. It wasn't a life-threatening injury, but the ruptured Achilles tendon in December slowed me down significantly. I started to say, "knocked me off my feet", but that could be interpreted as an overstatement. However, I am pleased to report that I am now back on my feet. It will be at least another two months before the injury is totally healed, but I'm up and moving.
Fortunately, the physical therapist's office is only fifteen minutes away, so carving out an hour and a half twice a week has not been undoable. It just requires planning. Before I fell down the stairs in December, I had gone to the HEB plus grocery store in Bulverde to pick up steak burgers (grass fed) to ensure we had burgers on hand.
Over the weekend, the Generally suggested that I needed to grill burgers. Out of sight-out of mind is mostly my modus operandi. I hadn't thought about the grill or the fact my Burgers are better than those from Mighty Fine Burgers. Of course, we are probably 45 minutes away from Belterra in Dripping Springs and that is the closest Mighty Fine Burgers.
I invited our daughter and son-in-law to come for burgers last night. So, what did we need? The General handed made me a short grocery list yesterday morning. The grocery store in Blanco is only about ten minutes from our home. I'm not sure why I bothered with the list. There were only three items on it: lettuce, tomatoes and a battery for the fire detector that was continuing to beep.
Did I mention I can't walk into any grocery store without picking up an item or two that is not on the list. The avocados in the store figuratively called out my name! The looked perfect and felt just right. I wondered about the fact that the General didn't include hamburger buns on the list, but I didn't give it a second thought. I also noticed that she didn't include an onion. I surmised that since the General always cuts onion from her order of a burger at Mighty Fine Burgers, that she probably didn't think onion is part of the standard-fare for a burger. I picked up an onion.
The grocery list were things I could remember without looking at the list. Seriously, three items don't really require a written list, so I left my list in the truck. When I returned home, I asked about the need for hamburger buns. We needed them. I said I'd pick them up when I went for physical therapy.
It wasn't until the burgers were grilled and we were ready to eat last night, that it became obvious that I failed to pick up a head of lettuce. It was no big deal. I surmised that if a touch of green was needed on the burgers, sliced avocados would work. It was a much better choice than lettuce.
All My Best!
Don
