Anne Lise always amazes me with her culinary skills. I often wonder how she finds the time to cook elaborate meals for her friends at university in London. When I went to university I didn't know how to cook. A family friend in Hong Kong gave me a beautiful cookbook which inspired me to attempt to cook. The cookbook was a compilation of recipes contributed by different people and the proceeds from the sale of the book went to charity. My favourite recipe was for Chinese beef steak. It was my signature dish when I cooked for friends, and somehow it never failed me.
Anne Lise went to university with a high level of cooking and baking skills, which she was determined to use to help her settle into university life and to make friends. A few days ago, she sent me the following message:
"I wanted to share with you what I made for an Easter dinner that I hosted at my flat!
I cooked for 12 people and started on Good Friday until Easter Sunday.
This was the full menu! I also baked hot cross buns for everyone to take home. It was my first time cooking a whole leg of lamb but it turned out successful, complete with a homemade gravy and mint sauce!
The biggest hit though was the cornbread, which I made with cornmeal, brown butter and sweetcorn for the extra texture and sweetness! My flatmate has an ice cream machine and so I also baked a carrot cake and infused my cream mixture with the cake before churning it into ice cream.
I also made homemade spinach artichoke dip, roast vegetables and massive bowl of pasta salad. I hope you had a lovely Easter celebration too and much love from London!" Anne Lise.
Well done Anne Lise!
I know very few university students with Anne Lise's level of culinary skills. Well, Vicki comes to mind. She is a German student studying in Austria. She sent photos of her Easter brunch. She cooks and bakes well too.
Genevieve, who is my friend's daughter, cooked her graduation lunch when she graduated from medical school, which included marinated ginger beef, pork in yellow bean sauce, sour and spicy Chinese leaf salad, aubergine in miso and chicken teriyaki dim sum. It was very impressive considering she is British and has never lived in Asia, though she used to visit her grandparents in Singapore when she was younger.
I used to think of cooking as a life skill, but I have come realise that cooking can also be a social skill.
